## What is an eSIM

An eSIM, short for embedded SIM, is a small chip soldered onto your phone's board at the factory. It ships empty. When you buy a plan, the provider sends you a profile, typically as a [QR code](/glossary/qr-code-installation/) by email or a one-tap install link, and your phone downloads that profile onto the chip. From that moment the phone connects to the network exactly as if a card had been inserted.

## What is a physical SIM

A physical SIM is the familiar removable card: a secure microchip mounted in plastic, inserted into a spring-loaded tray, carrying the credentials that identify your line to the network. It has shrunk over three decades from credit-card size to the 12.3 mm nano-SIM, but the concept is unchanged since 1991.

Its virtues are real. A card is self-evident: you can see it, move it between phones in seconds with no software involved, and hand it to someone across a shop counter.
