## What activating actually means

Adding an eSIM to an iPhone runs two separate operations that the interface presents as one word.

The first is the profile download. Your iPhone contacts the provider's activation server, identified by the [activation code](/glossary/activation-code/) in the QR code, and downloads an [eSIM profile](/glossary/esim-profile/) onto its secure element. This needs a working internet connection and takes seconds on a good one.

The second is network registration. The phone presents the new identity to a mobile network and waits to be accepted. This needs mobile coverage from a network the plan can use, and it is where a travel plan bought for another country will stall indefinitely.

## The six causes, most common first

- **A weak or filtered internet connection during install.** Public Wi Fi with a sign in page is the single most common cause, because the portal intercepts the traffic the download needs.
- **The activation server is busy.** Providers process activations in a queue. Congestion adds minutes, not hours.
- **The QR code has already been used.** Most codes are single use. A second install attempt on the same code, or an install on a different phone, leaves nothing to download.
- **Wrong date and time on the phone.** Profile downloads are cryptographically signed and a badly wrong clock invalidates the check. Set date and time to automatic.

## The fix sequence

Follow it in order. Each step is cheaper to undo than the one after it.

1. **Move to a strong, open Wi Fi connection**, ideally your home network. Avoid any network that shows a sign in page.
2. **Leave it for up to ten minutes** with the screen on. Most stalled activations complete on their own.
3. **Restart the iPhone.** This cleanly restarts a half finished process rather than layering a second attempt on top.
4. **Check Settings, General, Date and Time**, and switch on Set Automatically.
5. **Check for an iOS update** and install it if one is pending.

## Why captive portals break eSIM installs

Airport, hotel and cafe Wi Fi frequently uses a captive portal: you connect, and every request is redirected to a sign in page until you accept the terms. Your browser handles that redirect visibly. The eSIM installer does not, and simply sees its request answered by something that is not the activation server.

The result is an install that hangs or fails with no useful message, in exactly the place travellers most often attempt it. Three ways around it:

- Install at home before departure, on a network with no portal.
- Complete the portal sign in in Safari first, confirm a normal web page loads, and only then start the install.
- Use another phone's personal hotspot, which has no portal of its own.
