Most Samsung and Android eSIM failures come down to three settings rather than a fault: data roaming switched off for the travel line, the wrong line selected for mobile data, or a plan that has not started yet. A fourth cause, a region variant that never supported eSIM, explains nearly every case where the Add eSIM option is missing entirely.

This page works through the Samsung Galaxy and general Android fixes in order, covers the Samsung specific error messages, and explains why the same model number supports eSIM in one country and not another.

## The three settings that fix most cases

Open Settings, then Connections, then SIM manager on a Galaxy. Other Android phones use Network and Internet, then SIMs. Then check these in order.

1. **Is the travel line switched on.** A line added and left disabled looks installed and does nothing. Toggle it on.
2. **Is it the mobile data line.** Under Preferred SIM or Mobile data, select the travel eSIM. A phone happily registered on the travel line while routing data through your home line will either fail or bill you roaming.
3. **Is data roaming on for that line.** This is the single most common fix. Travel eSIMs connect as roaming partners on local networks, so with [data roaming](/glossary/data-roaming/) off the line registers and then refuses to pass traffic. Switch it on for the travel line and leave it off for your home line.

If all three are correct and there is still no data, restart the phone, then try manual network selection: turn off automatic selection and pick a listed operator by hand, as described in [fixing no signal abroad](/magazine/esim-no-signal-abroad-network-selection/). Our [complete troubleshooting guide](/magazine/esim-not-working-troubleshooting-guide/) covers the remaining checks including APN settings.

## Samsung error messages decoded

Samsung uses different wording from iPhone for the same underlying states, which is why searching the exact phrase often returns iPhone advice that does not match your menus.

| Message | What it means | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Your eSIM isn't ready yet | Profile download or activation has not completed | Strong Wi Fi, wait, then restart |
| SIM 1 not provisioned, SIM not provisioned MM#2 | The network has not activated that line | Restart, check plan start date and country |
| Not registered on network | Registration was refused by every available operator | Manual network selection, check coverage |
| Connected with no internet | Registered, but data is routed elsewhere or blocked | Set as mobile data line, switch on data roaming |
| Add eSIM missing from SIM manager | This variant does not support eSIM | Check the exact model number |

The slot numbering is worth calling out. On a dual SIM Galaxy, SIM 1 and SIM 2 are positions rather than technologies, so an error naming SIM 1 can refer to your eSIM. Work from the named line in SIM manager, not from the number in the message, and see the [eSIM not provisioned guide](/magazine/esim-not-provisioned-fix/) for the full sequence.

## When Add eSIM is missing entirely

If SIM manager offers no way to add an eSIM, the phone almost certainly does not support it, and no setting will reveal the option.

Samsung eSIM support varies by region and by variant, not just by model name. The same model can ship with eSIM in one market and without it in another, and the dual physical SIM version of a model is the variant most likely to lack it. Carrier branded handsets occasionally have the feature disabled in firmware.

Two things to check before concluding anything:

- **Your exact model number**, found under Settings, About phone. Match that string, not the marketing name, against Samsung's [Galaxy eSIM compatibility list](https://www.samsung.com/au/support/mobile-devices/esim-compatibility/).
- **Pending software updates.** A stalled update occasionally hides the menu, and installing it restores the option.

Broadly, Galaxy S20 and later flagship models support eSIM in most markets, as do recent Z Fold and Z Flip devices, with the regional exceptions above. Our [which phones support eSIM](/magazine/phones-that-support-esim-2026/) list covers the model ranges, and the [device compatibility checker](/device-compatibility/) confirms your own handset in under a minute.

If the phone genuinely has no eSIM support, the options are a physical SIM bought locally or a different handset. Our guide to [when an eSIM is not the right choice](/when-an-esim-isnt-right/) is honest about where that line falls.

## Galaxy S22, S23, S24 and newer

Searches naming a specific Galaxy generation nearly always turn out to be one of the general causes above rather than a model specific bug, but two patterns are worth knowing.

**Post update behaviour.** After a major One UI upgrade, some handsets reset per line preferences, which silently turns off data roaming for the travel line or moves mobile data back to the home line. If an eSIM that worked yesterday stopped working after an update, check those two switches before anything else.

**Variant confusion within one generation.** Because support varies by region and variant, one S23 can have eSIM and another S23 bought in a different market can not. That is why a friend's identical looking phone behaves differently, and why the model number under About phone is the only reliable answer. The compatibility list linked above resolves it in seconds.

Everything else, on every generation from the S20 family onward, follows the same order: line enabled, set as mobile data, data roaming on, restart, manual network selection.

## Android phones other than Samsung

Google Pixel, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Realme, Motorola and Honor all implement eSIM through the same Android framework, so the fixes above apply with different menu names. Google documents the Pixel flow in its [dual SIM guide](https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/9449293).

Two differences worth knowing. Several Chinese brands ship eSIM only in specific international variants, so regional support is even more uneven than on Samsung, and Indian market variants of otherwise eSIM capable models frequently lack it. And some manufacturer skins bury per line data roaming inside the SIM's own settings page rather than at the top level, which is where people give up looking.

The full installation walkthrough for any Android device is in our [eSIM for Android guide](/magazine/esim-for-android-complete-guide/).

## What not to do on Android

**Do not delete the eSIM profile to start over.** Android makes deletion easy, which is precisely the problem: most travel profiles use single use activation codes and cannot be reinstalled. Ask the provider about a reissue before removing anything.

**Do not reset network settings as a first step.** It clears saved Wi Fi networks and APN configuration, and it fixes almost none of the states in the table above.

**Do not leave home data roaming on while troubleshooting.** A home line quietly roaming next to a travel eSIM produces exactly the surprise bill the eSIM was bought to avoid, as covered in [avoiding roaming bill shock](/magazine/avoid-roaming-bill-shock/).

Once the line is working, plans by country are on the [destinations index](/destinations/), and the [dual SIM travel setup guide](/magazine/dual-sim-travel-setup-guide/) covers how to leave the two lines configured so this does not recur on the next trip.

## Buying a plan that installs cleanly on a Galaxy

If the plan itself has expired, run out, or was never going to work in the country you are in, a new one takes minutes.

[Viasimo](/) plans install on any eSIM capable Galaxy straight from SIM manager: the QR code arrives by email within minutes of purchase and there is no app to download first. Every plan is prepaid and one off, so nothing renews, and the countries covered plus the validity are shown before you pay, which is the check that prevents the coverage and expiry failures this guide describes.

Compare sizes on the [destinations index](/destinations/), or start with [the USA](/destinations/usa/), [Europe](/destinations/europe/) or [Japan](/destinations/japan/).

To go straight to buying, open the [eSIM plan picker](/esim/), choose where you are going and how long for, and the matching plans appear with their prices.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why is my eSIM not working on my Samsung?

On a Samsung Galaxy the three commonest causes are data roaming switched off for the travel line, the wrong line selected for mobile data, and the plan not having started yet. Travel eSIMs connect as roaming partners on local networks, so with roaming off for that line the phone registers and then refuses to pass data. Open SIM manager, confirm the travel line is on and set as the mobile data line, then switch on data roaming for it specifically. That sequence fixes the large majority of cases.

### What does your eSIM isn't ready yet mean on Samsung?

Your eSIM isn't ready yet means the profile download has not finished or the network has not completed activating the line. It is a waiting state rather than an error. Connect to strong Wi Fi without a sign in page, leave the phone for a few minutes, then restart it if nothing changes. If the message persists after a restart and the plan start date has passed, contact the provider with your order reference rather than deleting the profile, because most travel profiles cannot be reinstalled from the same code.

### Why is there no Add eSIM option on my Samsung?

A missing Add eSIM option almost always means the specific model variant you own does not support eSIM, because Samsung eSIM support varies by region and by variant rather than by model name alone. The same model sold in different markets can ship with or without it, and some carrier branded versions have it disabled. Check your exact model number against Samsung's own compatibility list, and update the software, because a pending update occasionally hides the menu. A dual physical SIM variant of a model is the version most likely to lack eSIM.

### Does eSIM work differently on Samsung than on iPhone?

The underlying technology is identical and the differences are in the menus and in how each phone handles line switching. Samsung groups eSIM controls under SIM manager, lets you rename lines freely, and exposes per line data roaming switches that iPhone presents differently. Samsung is also more willing to let you delete and re add profiles, which is a risk rather than a feature for single use travel profiles. The troubleshooting logic is the same on both: roaming, data line, plan status, network selection.

### How do I fix SIM 1 not provisioned on Samsung?

SIM 1 not provisioned on a Samsung is the network reporting that a line has not been activated, and the slot number often does not match the line you think it names. Identify which named line shows no service in SIM manager, restart the phone to force a fresh registration, confirm the plan has started and covers the country you are in, then select a network manually. Do not delete the profile as a first step, because deletion is usually irreversible on travel plans.

### Where can I buy an eSIM that installs cleanly on a Galaxy?

Viasimo plans install on any eSIM capable Galaxy straight from Settings, Connections, SIM manager, using a QR code that arrives by email within minutes of purchase with no app to download first. The covered countries, the data size and the validity are all shown before you pay, which prevents the two most common causes of a Galaxy eSIM failing: a plan that does not cover the country you are in, and a validity window that ended before your trip did.

### Why is my eSIM not working on a Samsung S23, S24 or S22?

Searches naming a specific Galaxy generation nearly always turn out to be one of the general causes rather than a model specific bug: data roaming off for the travel line, the wrong line set for mobile data, or a plan that has expired. After a major One UI update, check those first, because updates sometimes reset per line preferences.

### Why can't I add an eSIM on my Samsung?

A missing Add eSIM option means the specific model variant you own does not support eSIM, because Samsung support varies by region and variant rather than by model name. Dual physical SIM versions are the most likely to lack it. Check your exact model number under Settings, About phone against Samsung's own compatibility list, and install any pending update first.

### What does your eSIM isn't ready yet mean on a Samsung?

It means the profile download has not finished or the network has not completed activating the line. It is a waiting state rather than an error. Connect to strong wifi without a sign in page, wait a few minutes, then restart. If it persists after a restart and the plan start date has passed, contact the provider rather than deleting the profile.

### How do I fix SIM 1 not provisioned on a Samsung?

SIM 1 and SIM 2 are positions rather than technologies, so the error can name SIM 1 while the affected line is your eSIM. Work from the named line in SIM manager instead of the slot number, restart to force a fresh registration, then confirm the plan has started and covers the country you are in.

### Why is my eSIM not working on Android?

The three commonest causes on any Android phone are data roaming switched off for the travel line, the wrong line selected for mobile data, and a plan that has not started or has run out. Travel eSIMs connect as roaming partners on local networks, so with roaming off for that line the phone registers and then refuses to pass data.
