eSIM transfer is the process of moving an eSIM profile from one device to another, either with a built-in transfer tool or by reinstalling the profile on the new phone. Unlike a physical SIM, an eSIM cannot simply be popped out and slotted into the next handset.

There are two routes. Modern iPhones offer eSIM Quick Transfer, which moves a profile to a new iPhone during setup or via Bluetooth; recent Android versions offer a similar carrier-dependent tool. These built-in transfers work mainly with mainstream carrier eSIMs. The second route is reinstallation: deleting the profile on the old device and installing it fresh on the new one, usually through [QR code installation](/glossary/qr-code-installation/) or a manual activation code.

Here is the caveat that matters for travellers: many travel eSIMs are single-install. The [eSIM profile](/glossary/esim-profile/) can often be downloaded only once, so deleting it from your phone, or switching phones mid-trip, may permanently use it up unless the provider reissues it. Built-in transfer tools frequently do not support travel eSIM profiles at all. The safe habit is simple: never delete a travel eSIM while you still need it, and contact [support](/support/) before changing devices so the profile can be checked or reissued.

A common confusion is between transferring an eSIM and transferring a number. Moving your home carrier's eSIM brings your phone number with it; a travel data eSIM has no traditional number attached, so there is nothing to port, only the profile and its remaining data allowance.

Concrete example: your phone breaks in week one of a month-long trip. Rather than scanning the old QR code on the replacement phone and hoping, you message support, who verify the plan and issue a fresh installation for the new device.
