## St. Vincent & Grenadines: what to know before you land

Source: https://viasimo.com/destinations/st-vincent-grenadines/#destination-guide · Researched October 2026 by Viasimo

St Vincent and the Grenadines has two mobile networks, FLOW and Digicel, and our eSIM connects to FLOW over 4G/LTE. Two recent events still shape travel here: the April 2021 eruption of La Soufrière, which forced about 16,000 people from their homes, and Hurricane Beryl in July 2024, which damaged most homes on Union Island, Canouan and Mayreau.

### St. Vincent & Grenadines: quick facts

| Fact | St. Vincent & Grenadines |
| --- | --- |
| Emergency number | 911 (police), 999 (medical and fire) |
| Main airports | Argyle International Airport (St Vincent) (SVD) |
| Plug types | Type G (230V) |
| Currency | East Caribbean dollar (XCD) |
| Apps worth having | WhatsApp, Google Maps, Windy, Navionics |

### Argyle International (SVD) and the short run to Kingstown

(St. Vincent & Grenadines · https://viasimo.com/destinations/st-vincent-grenadines/#guide-argyle-international-svd-and-the-short-run-to-kingstown)

**Argyle International Airport** opened on 14 February 2017, replacing the old E.T. Joshua Airport near the capital. It sits on St Vincent's east coast, about 8 km from Kingstown, and has made direct flights from North America and the wider Caribbean far easier. Many visitors bound for the Grenadines still connect onwards on small aircraft or take the ferry from Kingstown.

The US State Department advises using only **clearly marked taxis**, and warns about petty theft and car break-ins. With data working as you clear arrivals, you can message your accommodation or driver, check your route to Kingstown or the south coast, and confirm ferry or connecting-flight times for Bequia, Canouan, Mustique or Union Island.

Our eSIM connects to **FLOW**, the Cable & Wireless network, over 4G/LTE. The country's other mobile provider is **Digicel**, but our eSIM does not switch to it, so if FLOW has no signal in a particular cove or anchorage, you will be offline until you are back in range. Save boarding passes, ferry tickets and accommodation details on your phone before travelling between islands.

### Union Island, Canouan and Mayreau after Hurricane Beryl

(St. Vincent & Grenadines · https://viasimo.com/destinations/st-vincent-grenadines/#guide-union-island-canouan-and-mayreau-after-hurricane-beryl)

On **1 July 2024**, Hurricane Beryl swept through the southern Grenadines. On **Canouan, Mayreau and Union Island**, between 80% and 90% of homes were damaged to some degree, and later reports put the figure at over 90% damaged or destroyed. Across the country, around 6,000 houses were affected, and Beryl caused near-total power and communications outages across much of the Lesser Antilles.

Recovery has been under way since, but conditions can vary between islands and even between bays. Before booking a stay, ask your guesthouse, villa or charter company how power, water and connectivity are holding up, and whether the local shops and services you are counting on are open again.

Hurricane season runs from **mid-May to November**. The State Department recommends following **CDEMA**, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency, and **NEMO**, St Vincent's National Emergency Management Organisation, for updates. Keep those pages bookmarked, check forecasts daily when you are on a boat or small island, and download any key documents in advance in case networks are disrupted again.

### Living with La Soufrière: NEMO alerts and safety on the water

(St. Vincent & Grenadines · https://viasimo.com/destinations/st-vincent-grenadines/#guide-living-with-la-soufriere-nemo-alerts-and-safety-on-the-water)

**La Soufrière**, the volcano in the north of St Vincent, erupted on **9 April 2021**, sending ash several miles into the atmosphere. About 16,000 people were evacuated from nearby communities, and the World Bank announced initial funding for long-term recovery soon afterwards. The State Department still describes the volcano as a constant threat, notes that earthquakes linked to volcanic activity can occur, and advises monitoring **NEMO** for updates.

If you plan to hike in the north, check NEMO's latest alerts before you go, and confirm with a local guide that the trail is open. There is little signal on the higher slopes, so tell someone your route and expected return time.

The State Department's water-safety advice is particularly relevant if you are sailing:

- Be wary of unfamiliar people or boats approaching yours, at anchor or at sea.
- Never swim alone, especially from isolated beaches.
- Watch out for jet ski and boat traffic.

In an emergency, dial **911** for police or **999** for medical and fire services. Our eSIM is data only, so use your home SIM for emergency calls.

## Seven days in St Vincent and the Grenadines: Kingstown, La Soufrière, Bequia and the Tobago Cays

7-day itinerary · 7 days · Source: https://viasimo.com/destinations/st-vincent-grenadines/#itinerary

A week that pairs St Vincent's volcanic interior with island life in the Grenadines: Kingstown and the leeward coast, a hike on La Soufrière if NEMO says it is open, then the ferry to Bequia and a sailing day to the Tobago Cays.

**When to go:** The dry season from December to May is best for hiking and sailing; hurricane season runs from mid-May to November, and the southern Grenadines are still recovering from Hurricane Beryl in July 2024, so check conditions before you book.

### Day 1 in St. Vincent & Grenadines: Kingstown and Fort Charlotte

- **Base:** Kingstown
- **Getting there:** Argyle International Airport (SVD) is about 8 km from Kingstown, roughly 20 minutes by clearly marked taxi.
- **Plan:** Drive in from Argyle and spend the afternoon in Kingstown. Walk through the Botanical Gardens, founded in 1765 and among the oldest in the Americas, where a breadfruit tree descended from the plants Captain Bligh brought in 1793 still grows, and look for St Vincent parrots in the aviary. Then drive up to Fort Charlotte on its ridge above the harbour for views across to Bequia at sunset.
- **Mobile signal:** FLOW 4G is reliable around Argyle, Kingstown and Fort Charlotte; our eSIM stays on FLOW and will not switch to Digicel.

### Day 2 in St. Vincent & Grenadines: Leeward coast: Wallilabou and Dark View Falls

- **Base:** Kingstown
- **Getting there:** Kingstown to Dark View Falls by road, about 1 hour 15 minutes along a winding coastal route.
- **Plan:** Drive north along the leeward coast road, stopping at the fishing villages of Layou and Barrouallie. At Wallilabou Bay see the remains of the film set used in Pirates of the Caribbean. Continue to Dark View Falls, two waterfalls reached over a bamboo bridge, with pools to bathe in. Return south, stopping on the way back at the Vermont Nature Trail if there is time.
- **Mobile signal:** Coverage is patchy along the leeward road and weak at Dark View Falls; the villages have a usable FLOW signal.

### Day 3 in St. Vincent & Grenadines: Hike La Soufrière

- **Base:** Kingstown
- **Getting there:** Kingstown to the windward trailhead by road is about 1 hour 30 minutes; hire a licensed guide.
- **Plan:** If NEMO confirms the volcano is open to hikers and your guide agrees, climb La Soufrière from the windward side. The trail starts in forest and climbs past the treeline to the crater rim at over 1,200 metres, where you look down into the crater reshaped by the April 2021 eruption. Allow a full day with transport. If the trail is closed, walk the Vermont Nature Trail instead to look for the St Vincent parrot.
- **Mobile signal:** There is little or no signal on the upper slopes and at the rim; check NEMO's alerts and tell someone your route before leaving coverage.

### Day 4 in St. Vincent & Grenadines: Ferry to Bequia: Port Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Beach

- **Base:** Bequia
- **Getting there:** Ferry from Kingstown to Port Elizabeth, Bequia, about 1 hour.
- **Plan:** Take the morning ferry from Kingstown to Bequia, the largest of the Grenadines. Settle into Port Elizabeth on Admiralty Bay, then walk the Belmont Walkway along the waterfront and over the headland to Princess Margaret Beach for a swim. Continue to Lower Bay, and come back for sunset over the yachts anchored in the bay.
- **Mobile signal:** FLOW coverage holds for much of the crossing; Port Elizabeth and the western beaches have good 4G.

### Day 5 in St. Vincent & Grenadines: Bequia: turtle sanctuary and Moonhole

- **Base:** Bequia
- **Plan:** Take a taxi to the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary on the north-east coast, where hawksbill turtles are raised and released to boost numbers. Continue along the windward side to Spring Bay and Industry Bay, then go south to see Moonhole, a group of stone houses built into the rock at the island's western tip. Finish at Friendship Bay, or watch the boat builders in Port Elizabeth making model sailing boats.
- **Mobile signal:** Good 4G around Port Elizabeth and Friendship Bay; weaker on the windward side near the turtle sanctuary.

### Day 6 in St. Vincent & Grenadines: Sailing day to the Tobago Cays

- **Base:** Bequia
- **Getting there:** A long sailing day from Bequia, around 2 hours or more each way depending on the boat and wind; trips also run from Union Island and Mayreau.
- **Plan:** Join a full-day catamaran or charter from Bequia south through the Grenadines to the Tobago Cays Marine Park, five uninhabited cays sheltered by Horseshoe Reef. Snorkel with green turtles over the seagrass off Baradal, then swim in the lagoon and climb the small hill on Jamesby for the view. Follow park rules on anchoring and fishing and leave nothing behind.
- **Mobile signal:** Expect little or no signal in the Tobago Cays and on parts of the passage; coverage returns near Canouan, Mayreau and Bequia.

### Day 7 in St. Vincent & Grenadines: Back to St Vincent and departure

- **Base:** Kingstown
- **Getting there:** Ferry from Bequia to Kingstown, about 1 hour, then around 20 minutes by taxi to Argyle International Airport.
- **Plan:** Take a morning ferry back to Kingstown. If your flight is later in the day, browse the Kingstown market for local produce and spices, or relax on the black sand at Villa Beach on the south coast near the airport road, before heading to Argyle for your departure.
- **Mobile signal:** Reliable 4G in Kingstown and at Argyle; check your flight status from the ferry terminal.

### Staying connected on this St. Vincent & Grenadines route

- Check NEMO's alerts for La Soufrière the evening before your hike, and save your guide's number offline.
- Download offline maps of St Vincent's leeward and windward roads, where FLOW coverage has gaps.
- During hurricane season, follow CDEMA and NEMO each morning before ferries and sailing trips.

## About this eSIM

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is one country spread across a mainland and a long tail of small islands and cays, and your phone treats those two halves very differently. On Saint Vincent itself, and in the main settlements of the larger Grenadines, mobile data behaves like an ordinary island service. Out on the water between them, it does not, so buy data for the whole trip and plan the sailing days as offline days.

### Getting online when you land

Argyle International sits on the windward side of Saint Vincent, a winding drive from Kingstown. Install the eSIM at home while you still have your own wifi, because installation needs a connection and the arrivals hall is not where you want to discover that. Once you land, switch the profile on, let it register, and check that data roaming is enabled for that line; on an eSIM travel plan that toggle is what lets it use the local network at all.

Plenty of people never touch the main island. If you are connecting through another Caribbean hub on a small aircraft straight to Bequia, Canouan or Union Island, the same sequence applies, just on a much smaller apron. If you arrive by ferry from Kingstown instead, you will usually hold signal for the first stretch out of the harbour and lose it partway across.

### The networks you'll be on

Cable&Wireless carries the traffic here, running 3G and 4G/LTE. There is no 5G layer in this market, so a strong LTE bar is the ceiling rather than a disappointment. That is comfortably enough for maps, voice calls over WhatsApp, photo uploads and standard-definition video. It is not the right connection for uploading a week of 4K clips from a beach bar, and trying will chew through an allowance fast.

Signal is provisioned around where people actually live and where boats actually tie up, which in practice means the leeward coast, the capital and the yachting anchorages.

### Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Kingstown holds a solid signal, as does the Villa and Indian Bay strip where most of the mainland hotels sit. The Leeward Highway up the west coast stays usable through Layou and Barrouallie, and the road east toward Argyle is fine.

It thins fast the moment you go up or go out. The interior is volcanic and steep, and the trails into it, including the long walk up La Soufriere and the forest paths in the Vermont valley, run through terrain that blocks signal for long stretches. Treat any hike as unconnected. The northern tip of the island beyond Fancy and Owia is sparse, and the waterfall sites reachable only by boat on the north coast are effectively offline.

In the Grenadines, Port Elizabeth on Bequia and Clifton on Union Island are the reliable spots, with Canouan and Mustique also served around their settlements. Mayreau and the anchorages of the Tobago Cays are where cruising sailors expect to drop off the grid, and they usually do. Between islands, out of sight of a settled shoreline, assume nothing.

### What you'll actually use data for here

Almost every arrangement in this country happens over WhatsApp. Dive shops, boat boys, taxi drivers, guesthouse owners and charter crews confirm times and prices by message, often the same morning, which makes a working data line more useful than a printed itinerary. Ferry departures between Kingstown and Bequia shift with the day of the week and with the weather, and checking a schedule the night before saves a wasted morning at the jetty.

Sailors lean on data hardest. Marine forecasts, wind apps and anchorage notes are worth pulling down while you still have bars in Admiralty Bay or Clifton, because you will want them precisely where there is no signal. Beyond that it is the ordinary stuff: mapping the road to Dark View Falls, looking up which beaches have shade, and sending pictures home from a black sand shoreline that always photographs better than people expect.

### Before you fly

Download offline maps covering the whole of Saint Vincent plus each Grenadine you plan to visit, since the islands are separate map tiles and it is easy to grab one and forget the rest. Screenshot ferry timetables rather than trusting you can reload them at the dock. Save the phone numbers of your guesthouse and any boat operator into your contacts as international numbers, so a call still works if data stalls.

Keep your regular home line active alongside the travel plan if your bank sends verification codes by text, and set the travel eSIM as your data line so nothing quietly falls back to expensive home roaming. Turn off automatic cloud photo backup before you leave; a week of island pictures syncing in the background is the single most common way people burn an allowance without noticing.

Finally, load anything you want to watch or listen to before departure. The crossings are long, the water is beautiful for about the first half hour, and after that you will be glad of a downloaded playlist.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does an eSIM work in St. Vincent & Grenadines?

Yes. Your St. Vincent & Grenadines eSIM connects automatically the moment you arrive, with no roaming fees and nothing to set up at the airport. The host networks it can use are FLOW. Coverage runs on 4G LTE. There is no 5G on our host network in St. Vincent & Grenadines yet.

### Do I get 5G in St. Vincent & Grenadines?

No. FLOW do not yet offer 5G to visitors in St. Vincent & Grenadines, so your eSIM connects over 4G LTE or slower. Anyone claiming 5G for this destination is quoting a spec sheet, not the network you will actually get.

### Which mobile networks work in St Vincent and the Grenadines?

There are two providers, FLOW and Digicel. Our eSIM connects to FLOW over 4G/LTE and does not switch to Digicel, so in places where FLOW is weak you will be offline. Coverage is best around Kingstown, the south coast and the main island settlements, and drops away in the interior, the far north and between islands.

### Has Union Island recovered from Hurricane Beryl?

Recovery has been under way since Hurricane Beryl hit on 1 July 2024, when more than 80% of homes on Union Island, Canouan and Mayreau were damaged. Conditions vary by island, so ask your accommodation or charter company about power, water and connectivity before you book, and follow NEMO and CDEMA updates during hurricane season.

### Is it safe to hike La Soufrière?

Check first. La Soufrière erupted on 9 April 2021 and forced about 16,000 people to evacuate. The US State Department calls it a constant threat and advises monitoring NEMO, St Vincent's emergency management office, for alerts. Confirm with a local guide that the trail is open, and tell someone your route, as mobile signal on the upper slopes is limited.

### How far is Argyle International Airport from Kingstown?

About 8 km. Argyle, on St Vincent's east coast, opened in February 2017 and replaced the old E.T. Joshua Airport. Use clearly marked taxis or pre-arranged transfers, as the State Department advises, and switch your eSIM on as you land so you can contact your driver and check onward ferries or flights to the Grenadines.

### How much data do I need for 7 days in St. Vincent & Grenadines?

For 7 days in St. Vincent & Grenadines, Viasimo sells 1 GB for $13.99 and unlimited data for $124.99. Our sizing recommendation, not a measurement: maps, messaging and the occasional lookup, about 1 GB a week; maps, social, photos and some browsing, about 3 to 7 GB a week. The data calculator on this site works it out from how you actually use your phone.
