Most visitors come in through Sint Maarten and finish the journey on a short hop flight or the ferry, which is the first reason to have data working before you get anywhere near St Barth itself: connections here are tight, schedules shift with the weather, and villa arrivals are usually arranged by message. Lorient, Flamands, Grand Cul de Sac and the roads linking them are generally fine, and most villa areas are covered because the villas are where the infrastructure follows. Terrain is what breaks it. The island is a series of steep ridges and deep coves, and once you drop into a bay with high ground between you and the transmitter, bars disappear even though you are only a couple of minutes from a strong signal. The walk out to Colombier beach is patchy, particularly on the sheltered side of the headland. Anse de Grande Saline and Gouverneur sit in bowls behind hills and can be weak at the sand even when the car park above is fine. Day trips out to the surrounding islets, snorkelling excursions and any sailing beyond the immediate coast should be planned as offline time.
