## Nauru: what to know before you land

Source: https://viasimo.com/destinations/nauru/#destination-guide · Researched October 2026 by Viasimo

Nauru is a 21 km² island of about 12,000 people with roughly 30 km of road, and Digicel is its mobile network. Your eSIM connects to Digicel on 4G/LTE. Visitors need a visa, and the UK government says cards aren't accepted and the island's only ATM is often empty, so bring enough Australian dollars in cash.

### Nauru: quick facts

| Plug types | Type I (240V) |

| Apps worth having | WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Google Maps |

### Digicel Nauru and Telstra's 2022 takeover of Digicel Pacific

(Nauru · https://viasimo.com/destinations/nauru/#guide-digicel-nauru-and-telstra-s-2022-takeover-of-digicel-pacific)

Nauru's mobile network is run by **Digicel**, part of the Digicel Pacific group. On **14 July 2022**, Australia's largest telecoms company, **Telstra**, completed its purchase of Digicel's Pacific business. The deal was announced in October 2021 and reported as backed by the Australian government. Digicel still trades under its own name in Nauru, so that's the network name you'll see on your phone.

Your eSIM connects to Digicel on **4G/LTE**. That handles messaging, email, maps and video calls comfortably. If a video call stutters, switch to audio or a voice note, which needs much less data.

If you're on an Australian mobile plan, Telstra's ownership of Digicel doesn't mean your plan covers Nauru as domestic. Nauru is a separate country, so check your plan's international roaming terms or use data on the eSIM.

### Cash-only Nauru and the single ATM at the Menen Hotel

(Nauru · https://viasimo.com/destinations/nauru/#guide-cash-only-nauru-and-the-single-atm-at-the-menen-hotel)

Nauru uses the **Australian dollar**, but card payments are not part of everyday life. The UK government says **credit cards aren't accepted**, and that the island has **one ATM, at the Menen Hotel**, which is often out of cash. Its advice is to bring enough Australian dollars for your whole stay.

Use your mobile data before you arrive, not after. Work out your likely costs, including accommodation, car hire and meals, and withdraw the cash at your last stop, whether that's Brisbane, Nadi or another hub on the Nauru Airlines network. Let your bank know where you're going in case you need to contact them later.

Once you're on the island, data is useful mainly for keeping in touch with your bank and your accommodation, not for paying. Keep your home SIM switched on in case your bank sends SMS verification codes for a payment you need to make online, such as a flight change. Store a photo of your passport and visa separately from the cash you're carrying.

### Nauru Airlines routes from Brisbane, Nadi and Tarawa

(Nauru · https://viasimo.com/destinations/nauru/#guide-nauru-airlines-routes-from-brisbane-nadi-and-tarawa)

**Nauru Airlines** is the island's lifeline. From Nauru International's 2,150 m runway it flies to **Brisbane**, **Nadi** and **Suva** in Fiji, **Tarawa** in Kiribati, **Majuro** in the Marshall Islands, **Pohnpei** in the Federated States of Micronesia and **Koror** in Palau. For most visitors from outside the Pacific, Brisbane is the main connection.

With limited flights on most routes, a delay or cancellation can cost you days. Check your booking regularly in the days before departure while you have signal, and keep your airline confirmation saved offline. The UK government also notes wider disruption to international travel after the escalation in the Middle East, so check advice for any transit country on your route.

If you're combining Nauru with Kiribati, the Marshall Islands or Micronesia, remember that a Nauru plan only works on Nauru. Arrange data for each stop separately and check whether you need a visa or entry approval for each country before you fly.

### Rainy season, drought and calling 110, 111 or 112

(Nauru · https://viasimo.com/destinations/nauru/#guide-rainy-season-drought-and-calling-110-111-or-112)

The UK government says Nauru's **rainy season runs from November to May** and can bring strong winds, sea swells and the risk of tropical cyclones. The island also has periods of **severe drought**, when authorities may restrict water use. If you're visiting in a dry spell, ask your accommodation about water rules, and follow any notices the government posts on its channels.

Nauru's emergency numbers are different from Australia's 000, so save them before you travel:

- **110**: police
- **111**: ambulance
- **112**: fire

The UK has no embassy in Nauru. Consular help for British nationals comes from the British High Commission in **Honiara**, Solomon Islands, and the FCDO in London is reachable 24 hours on +44 20 7008 5000. Your eSIM doesn't carry voice calls, so make emergency calls with your home SIM while roaming, or ask your hotel to call for you.

## Two days on Nauru: the ring road, Command Ridge, Topside and Anibare Bay

Short-stay itinerary · 2 days · Source: https://viasimo.com/destinations/nauru/#itinerary

Nauru's 19 km ring road can be driven in under half an hour, so two days is plenty: one for the coast, the capital district and Anibare Bay, and one for the mined interior, Buada Lagoon and the wartime sites on Command Ridge.

**When to go:** June to October is the drier period with lighter winds; the UK government gives the rainy season as November to May, with strong winds, swells and occasional cyclone risk, and Nauru Airlines' limited schedule means you should plan around flight days rather than the weather.

### Day 1 in Nauru: Yaren, the ring road and Anibare Bay

- **Base:** Yaren district
- **Getting there:** The airport is in Yaren beside the ring road; the full loop is about 19 km and takes around 25 minutes by car or 2–3 hours by bicycle.
- **Plan:** From the airport, drive or cycle the ring road anticlockwise, passing Yaren with Parliament House and government buildings, and the Second World War pillboxes and gun emplacements along the shore. Stop at the boat harbour at Anibare to watch fishermen landing their catch, then swim in Anibare Bay, the island's best beach, among the coral pinnacles, staying inside the reef in calm conditions. Finish with sunset on the west coast.
- **Mobile signal:** Digicel 4G covers the coastal belt where almost everyone lives, so expect usable data all the way round the ring road.

### Day 2 in Nauru: Topside, Buada Lagoon and Command Ridge

- **Base:** Yaren district
- **Getting there:** Topside and Buada are reached by inland roads off the ring road; Command Ridge is about an 800 m walk from the road.
- **Plan:** Head up onto Topside, the island's interior plateau, to see the landscape left by a century of phosphate mining: grey limestone pinnacles, abandoned machinery and patches of regrowth. Do not photograph the detention facility there. Drive the sealed road round Buada Lagoon, the island's only freshwater lake, then walk the short track up Command Ridge, the highest point, to see the Japanese anti-aircraft guns and the former communications bunker.
- **Mobile signal:** Coverage is generally good even on Topside because the island is so small, but signal can weaken among the pinnacles and inside bunkers.

### Staying connected on this Nauru route

- Before you fly, withdraw enough Australian dollars for the whole stay and save your Nauru Airlines booking offline; cards are not accepted and the only ATM is often empty.
- Check your flight status online while you have signal in the days before departure, since a cancellation can cost several days.
- Save 110 (police), 111 (ambulance) and 112 (fire); Australia's 000 does not work here, and the eSIM is data only.

## About this eSIM

### Arriving at Nauru International (INU)

You'll fly in to **Nauru International Airport (INU)** in Yaren district, the de facto capital, where the runway runs right beside Parliament House, a police station and a secondary school. It's a small airport, so arrival is quick. Turn your eSIM on as you taxi in and let it register with the local network before you step off the plane. A quick message to your hotel or host confirming you've landed is usually all you need.

Nauru has no official capital, and the island is so small that you're never far from the airport. That makes it one of the easier Pacific arrivals to handle, as long as the paperwork is done before you board: the UK government says you **must have a visa** to visit and your passport needs at least **three months' validity** from the date you arrive. Keep a copy of your visa approval and hotel booking saved offline as well as in your email, in case the border officer asks.

### One network on a very small island

There is effectively one mobile network to think about, Digicel, and your eSIM uses it. In 2011 an official said only the 556, 557 and 558 number ranges were in use for mobiles and that no landlines were in service, which tells you how central the mobile network is to everyday life. Wikipedia lists CenPacNet and Digicel as the internet providers.

Because the inhabited coastal strip is so compact, you'll mostly be within range of a mast. The interior is different: **Topside**, the raised plateau where phosphate mining left fields of bare limestone pinnacles, has very few people. If you walk up to Buada Lagoon or explore the mined-out areas, download a map of the island first and tell someone at your hotel where you are going. With only one network, if Digicel's signal drops there is no other network for your phone to switch to.

### What you'll use data for here

The main uses are keeping in touch and checking your onward travel. Nauru is on UTC+12, two hours ahead of Brisbane, so messaging family at home means working out time differences. Your eSIM handles data only, so ordinary calls and SMS still go through your home SIM while roaming. WhatsApp and other messaging apps work over data.

You won't use mobile payments much. With cash the norm, data is more useful for checking exchange rates, planning how much cash to bring for the rest of the trip and contacting your bank if your card is blocked elsewhere on your route. If you're travelling for work, email and video calls will make up much of your usage, so upload large files on hotel Wi-Fi when you can.

### Before you fly

Sort out your visa and accommodation before you book flights, and check the cash rules below. Install your eSIM at home while you have reliable internet, and make sure your phone is unlocked. Download an offline map of the island and save copies of your Nauru Airlines booking, your visa approval and your hotel details. Keep your home SIM in the phone for calls and texts, and pack a power bank and an adaptor for Australian-style **Type I** sockets.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does an eSIM work in Nauru?

Yes. Your Nauru eSIM connects automatically the moment you arrive, with no roaming fees and nothing to set up at the airport. The host networks it can use are Digicel. Coverage runs on 4G LTE. There is no 5G on our host network in Nauru yet.

### Do I get 5G in Nauru?

No. Digicel do not yet offer 5G to visitors in Nauru, so your eSIM connects over 4G LTE or slower. Anyone claiming 5G for this destination is quoting a spec sheet, not the network you will actually get.

### Can I use a credit card in Nauru?

Generally not. The UK government says credit cards aren't accepted in Nauru and there is only one ATM, at the Menen Hotel, which is often out of cash. Bring enough Australian dollars for your whole stay, and withdraw it at your last stop before Nauru, such as Brisbane or Nadi.

### Which mobile network operates in Nauru?

Digicel, which your eSIM connects to on 4G/LTE. It's part of Digicel Pacific, which Australia's Telstra bought in July 2022, but it still trades as Digicel. Being owned by Telstra doesn't mean an Australian plan treats Nauru as domestic, so check your roaming terms or use the eSIM for data.

### Where can I fly to Nauru from?

Nauru Airlines flies to Nauru International Airport (INU) from Brisbane, Nadi, Suva, Tarawa, Majuro, Pohnpei and Koror. Brisbane is the usual connection for travellers from outside the Pacific. Flights are limited, so check your flights regularly while you have signal and leave time for delays.

### What are the emergency numbers in Nauru?

The UK government lists 110 for police, 111 for ambulance and 112 for fire. Australia's 000 doesn't work here. Your eSIM is data only, so make emergency calls on your home SIM while roaming, or ask your hotel to call. British consular support comes from the High Commission in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

### How much data do I need for 7 days in Nauru?

For 7 days in Nauru, Viasimo sells 1 GB for $4.00 and unlimited data for $47.00. Our sizing recommendation, not a measurement: maps, messaging and the occasional lookup, about 1 GB a week; maps, social, photos and some browsing, about 3 to 7 GB a week. The data calculator on this site works it out from how you actually use your phone.
