## Moldova: what to know before you land

Source: https://viasimo.com/destinations/moldova/#destination-guide · Researched October 2026 by Viasimo

Moldova is now on the European Commission's list of places where EU roam-like-at-home rules apply, which helps EU SIM holders but not visitors from the UK, US or elsewhere. Your eSIM uses Orange, the largest operator with over half of mobile subscribers. Note that Chișinău airport's code changed from KIV to RMO in 2024, and breakaway Transnistria runs its own network and currency.

### Moldova: quick facts

| Fact | Moldova |
| --- | --- |
| Emergency number | 112 |
| Main airports | Chișinău Eugen Doga International Airport (RMO) |
| Plug types | Type C, F (230V) |
| Currency | Moldovan leu (MDL) |
| Apps worth having | WhatsApp, Viber, Telegram, Google Maps, Bolt |

### Chișinău Eugen Doga Airport: RMO, not KIV

(Moldova · https://viasimo.com/destinations/moldova/#guide-chisinau-eugen-doga-airport-rmo-not-kiv)

Moldova's only airport with regular passenger flights is **Chișinău Eugen Doga International Airport**, about 13 km south-east of the city centre. On **18 January 2024** its IATA code changed from **KIV to RMO**. Older bookings, loyalty apps and some third-party sites may still show KIV, so if a search for flights or transfers returns nothing, try the other code.

The airport has grown fast. It handled about **4.14 million passengers in 2024**, a record at the time, and traffic has kept growing. Wizz Air, which suspended its Moldova flights in March 2023, returned on 16 December 2024 and has a base there, and FlyOne uses the airport as its hub with the widest choice of destinations.

What this means when you land:

- Busy evening arrival waves are now normal, so expect queues at passport control and at the taxi rank. Having data on arrival lets you book a ride or message your host while you wait.
- Low-cost flights often arrive late. Check that your accommodation's check-in instructions are saved offline.
- The short drive into the city means you will not be in the car long enough to sort a phone problem en route. Confirm your eSIM is working before you leave the terminal.

### EU roaming in Moldova, and the Orange, Moldcell and Moldtelecom market

(Moldova · https://viasimo.com/destinations/moldova/#guide-eu-roaming-in-moldova-and-the-orange-moldcell-and-moldtelecom-market)

The European Commission's Your Europe guidance now says that **roam like at home** is available not only in EU and EEA countries but also in **Moldova and Ukraine**. If you have an EU SIM, check with your operator how it applies, including any fair-use limits, before relying on it. The Commission still warns that roaming outside the EU and EEA can be expensive.

If you are coming from the **UK, the US, Canada or elsewhere**, none of this applies. Your home operator sets its own Moldova roaming rates, which is where a local data plan helps.

The local market has three main players. In 2020, **Orange Moldova**, launched in 1998 as Voxtel, had about 55.7% of mobile subscribers. **Moldcell** had 33.1%, and **Moldtelecom**, through its Unité brand, had 11.2%. Your eSIM connects to Orange. Its published figures put GSM coverage at 99.4% of the population and 98.9% of the territory, with 3G reaching about 88.5% of the population.

Ookla Net Metrics data puts the average fixed broadband download speed at around 120 Mbit/s. Chișinău and regional centres also have fibre at up to 1 Gbit/s, so guesthouse and hotel wifi is often fast.

### Transnistria: a separate network, a separate currency

(Moldova · https://viasimo.com/destinations/moldova/#guide-transnistria-a-separate-network-a-separate-currency)

The strip of land east of the Dniester around **Tiraspol** is controlled by self-declared Transnistrian authorities, not the Moldovan government. The UK FCDO **advises against all travel** to Transnistria. All border crossings between Ukraine and Transnistria are temporarily closed, and the authorities there have expanded powers to prosecute and detain people they consider extremists, a definition that can include moderate protest and free expression. Be careful what you post online while there.

The practical differences for your phone and wallet:

- **Mobile network**: Interdnestrcom (IDC) is the only major mobile carrier in Transnistria, and Moldovan companies have historically been denied access to the territory. Do not expect a Moldova data plan to behave normally there.
- **Currency**: Transnistria uses the **Transnistrian ruble**. GOV.UK says local ATMs will not accept cards from non-Transnistrian banks, and you cannot exchange rubles outside the region. The authorities consider paying in any other currency illegal.
- **Statistics and maps**: Moldova's official telecoms figures exclude Transnistria, so coverage claims for "Moldova" do not include it.

If you do cross despite the advice, download maps and documents in Chișinău and take cash to change on arrival.

## Seven days in Moldova: Chișinău, the wine cellars, Orheiul Vechi and Soroca

7-day itinerary · 7 days · Source: https://viasimo.com/destinations/moldova/#itinerary

A week for wine lovers and curious travellers, best done with a car and driver: Chișinău as a base, the vast underground cellars of Cricova and Mileștii Mici, the cave monastery at Orheiul Vechi, the Dniester monasteries and Soroca's fortress, staying out of Transnistria throughout.

**When to go:** May to June and September to October are warm and green, and the first weekend of October brings the National Wine Day festivities in Chișinău; summers are hot and winters cold and grey.

### Day 1 in Moldova: Chișinău

- **Base:** Chișinău
- **Getting there:** Chișinău Eugen Doga International Airport (RMO) is about 13 km from the centre; use a booked taxi or app rather than unlicensed drivers.
- **Plan:** Start at the Cathedral Park, with the Nativity Cathedral and the Arc de Triomphe, then walk along Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard past the government buildings. Visit the National Museum of History of Moldova and the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History, housed in a striking Moorish-revival building. Finish in Valea Morilor park by the lake in the evening.
- **Mobile signal:** Orange 5G is available in central Chișinău, with solid 4G across the city.

### Day 2 in Moldova: Cricova and Mileștii Mici wine cellars

- **Base:** Chișinău
- **Getting there:** Each winery is about 20 to 30 minutes by road from central Chișinău.
- **Plan:** Book tours of two of Moldova's famous underground wine cities. Cricova, about 15 km north of Chișinău, has tens of kilometres of tunnels in old limestone mines, driven through by electric cart. In the afternoon, visit Mileștii Mici to the south, whose galleries hold one of the largest wine collections in the world. Arrange a driver for the day so you can taste safely.
- **Mobile signal:** No signal deep in the cellars; book tours online in advance and save the confirmations offline. Good 4G on the roads between them.

### Day 3 in Moldova: Orheiul Vechi

- **Base:** Chișinău
- **Getting there:** About an hour by road from Chișinău.
- **Plan:** Drive north to Orheiul Vechi, where the Răut river loops through a limestone gorge. Visit the cave monastery cut into the cliff above the river, still used by monks, and walk to the bell tower and church on the ridge for views over the meander. Explore the village of Butuceni below, with its traditional houses and small ethnographic museum, then return to Chișinău.
- **Mobile signal:** 4G in Butuceni and on the ridge, but the cave monastery itself has little or no signal.

### Day 4 in Moldova: Saharna and Soroca

- **Base:** Soroca
- **Getting there:** About 2.5 to 3 hours by road from Chișinău, with a short detour to Saharna.
- **Plan:** Head north along the right bank of the Dniester. Stop at Saharna Monastery in a wooded gorge, and walk up past the waterfalls to the viewpoint above it. Continue to Soroca and visit the round 16th-century fortress on the riverbank, built under Stephen the Great. Before sunset, walk up to the Candle of Gratitude monument on the cliff above the town for a view across the river into Ukraine.
- **Mobile signal:** 4G in Soroca town, but expect gaps in the Saharna gorge. Along the Dniester your phone may try to connect to a Ukrainian network, so keep your Moldova plan selected manually.

### Day 5 in Moldova: Țipova and back to Chișinău

- **Base:** Chișinău
- **Getting there:** About two hours from Soroca to Țipova, then about two hours to Chișinău; avoid driving rural roads after dark.
- **Plan:** Drive south to Țipova, the largest cave monastery in Moldova, carved into cliffs high above the Dniester. The walk down to the cave churches and the waterfall below is steep, so wear good shoes. Return to Chișinău in the afternoon, stopping in Orhei town if you want a break on the way.
- **Mobile signal:** Patchy at Țipova and on the cliff paths, and the far bank of the river here is Transnistrian-controlled. Keep your phone set to Orange manually to avoid joining the separate Transnistrian network.

### Day 6 in Moldova: Castel Mimi and a southern winery

- **Base:** Chișinău
- **Plan:** Visit Castel Mimi in Bulboaca, a restored 19th-century château winery with gardens and cellar tours, about 45 minutes south-east of Chișinău. Have lunch there, then return to the city; do not continue east towards Bender or Tighina, which are in Transnistria. Spend the evening in Chișinău's central market or at a local wine bar.
- **Mobile signal:** Good 4G at Castel Mimi. This area is close to Transnistria, so as on day five, keep Orange selected and watch for unexpected network changes.

### Day 7 in Moldova: Codri monasteries and departure

- **Base:** Chișinău
- **Getting there:** Căpriana is about 45 minutes by road from Chișinău, and the airport is a short drive from the city.
- **Plan:** On your last morning, drive into the Codri forest west of Chișinău to Căpriana Monastery, one of the oldest in Moldova and linked to Stephen the Great. If time allows, continue to Hîncu Monastery by its lake. Return to Chișinău for your flight, or keep a spare hour for a last visit to the National Art Museum.
- **Mobile signal:** Patchy in the forest around the monasteries, with good 4G and 5G back in Chișinău and at the airport.

### Staying connected on this Moldova route

- The UK advises against all travel to Transnistria, which runs its own network; set your phone to select Orange manually near the Dniester.
- Book Cricova, Mileștii Mici and Castel Mimi tours online and save the confirmations, as there is no signal underground.
- Use Bolt or a hotel-booked taxi in Chișinău rather than flagging down unofficial cars.

## About this eSIM

Our Moldova coverage runs on Orange, with 3G and 4G/LTE. One partner network rather than a choice of several is worth knowing up front, because it sets expectations honestly: in Chisinau and the larger towns you will have a fast, unremarkable connection, and in the deep countryside you get what that single network reaches and nothing else. For a country most people cross by car between wineries and monasteries, that is usually fine, as long as you cache your route before you leave the capital.

### Getting online when you land

Chisinau International is close to the city, and the drive in is short enough that you do not strictly need a map for it. You do need one for everything after. Install the profile before you travel, while you are on wifi at home, and leave it switched off until you land.

At the terminal, enable the plan, wait for it to attach to 4G/LTE, and make it your data line. Your usual SIM stays in place for calls and the codes your bank sends. Turn roaming off on that home line so nothing runs up a bill in the background.

If the connection does not appear, one flight-mode toggle usually sorts it; a restart is the next step. It is worth confirming you are online before you leave the airport building, because sorting a phone out at a village crossroads at dusk is a different kind of problem.

### The networks you'll be on

You will be on Orange, which covers 4G LTE and 5G where it has been rolled out. 4G LTE is what you will mostly use, and it handles maps, messaging, calls over the internet and photo uploads perfectly well, and the constraint that actually shapes your trip is geography, not radio generation.

Nothing needs configuring. The phone attaches on its own and stays attached. When the signal weakens it steps down to 3G rather than cutting out, so a slow page load in a rural area is usually a fallback rather than a failure. Wait a few seconds before assuming something is wrong.

### Where coverage holds, and where it thins

Dependable: Chisinau and its ring of suburbs, Bălți in the north, Cahul in the south, Comrat in Gagauzia, and the main roads linking them. The wine estates within easy reach of the capital, the ones most visitors see, are generally well served, as is Soroca up on the Dniester.

Thinner: the farm tracks and village lanes off the main routes, the wooded Codru hills, the river valleys where the land drops away, and the far edges of the country near the borders. Moldova is not a mountainous country, so the drop-offs are less dramatic than in an alpine destination; they are more a matter of distance from infrastructure than of terrain blocking a signal.

Then there is the specific case that catches wine tourists out: the great cellars at Cricova and Mileștii Mici are underground road networks cut into limestone, and you will have no signal at all down there. That is not a coverage failure, it is rock. Agree with your group where you will meet before you descend. Orheiul Vechi's cave monastery is the same idea on a smaller scale.

Treat the left bank of the Dniester around Tiraspol as its own situation. Do not plan on your data working normally there; load everything you need in advance and be prepared to be offline for the visit.

### What you'll actually use data for here

Navigation, more than in most European countries. Rural signposting is limited and villages often have a single road with no obvious name, so the map is doing real work rather than confirming what you already know. Download the country offline before you set out; it is a small file and it removes the entire problem.

Translation gets constant use. Romanian is the state language and Russian is widely spoken, menus and museum labels are frequently in neither of your languages, and a camera translation app makes shop and restaurant signs readable in a second.

Winery visits are almost all booked ahead, usually by phone or through a messaging app, and confirmations tend to arrive the evening before. Being reachable matters. Ride-hailing works in Chisinau and is the easy way to get around after dark. Beyond that it is the normal load: photos, messages home, and looking up the history of whatever fortress you are currently standing in.

### Before you fly

Confirm the handset is unlocked and supports eSIM, then install the profile at home rather than at the airport.

Save your accommodation address as a screenshot, in the local spelling as well as your own. Download the offline map. If you are hiring a car, note that the good roads and the bad roads are not always distinguishable on a map, and that a route which looks like a shortcut across country can be an unsurfaced track.

Pack a car charger. Long driving days between the capital, the north and the south are how most trips here are structured, and a phone running navigation for three hours does not last the day on its own.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does an eSIM work in Moldova?

Yes. Your Moldova eSIM connects automatically the moment you arrive, with no roaming fees and nothing to set up at the airport. The host networks it can use are Orange. Coverage runs on 4G LTE and 5G where the network has rolled it out, and falls back to 4G elsewhere.

### Do I get 5G in Moldova?

Yes, where it has been deployed. 5G runs on Orange in Moldova, and your eSIM uses it automatically on a 5G-capable phone, dropping back to 4G LTE outside covered areas. No country is covered everywhere, so 5G availability varies by location.

### Does EU roam-like-at-home work in Moldova?

According to the European Commission's Your Europe guidance, roam-like-at-home is now available in Moldova and Ukraine as well as the EU and EEA. If you have an EU SIM, check your operator's terms and any fair-use limits. Visitors from the UK, US and other non-EU countries are not covered and pay whatever their operator charges for Moldova.

### What is the airport code for Chișinău?

RMO. Chișinău Eugen Doga International Airport changed its IATA code from KIV to RMO on 18 January 2024. Some older bookings and apps may still use KIV. It is Moldova's only airport with regular passenger flights, 13 km south-east of the city and handled about 4.14 million passengers in 2024.

### Will my phone work in Transnistria?

Do not count on it. Interdnestrcom (IDC) is the only major mobile carrier in Transnistria, and Moldovan companies have historically been denied access there, so a Moldova plan may not work normally. The UK advises against all travel to Transnistria. Download what you need in Chișinău first, and take cash, as local ATMs reject foreign cards.

### Which is the biggest mobile network in Moldova?

Orange Moldova, which had about 55.7% of mobile subscribers in 2020, ahead of Moldcell on 33.1% and Moldtelecom's Unité on 11.2%. Orange reports GSM coverage for 99.4% of the population and 98.9% of the territory. A travel eSIM that uses Orange is on the network with the widest reach.

### How much data do I need for 7 days in Moldova?

For 7 days in Moldova, Viasimo sells 1 GB for $1.59 and unlimited data for $13.99. Our sizing recommendation, not a measurement: maps, messaging and the occasional lookup, about 1 GB a week; maps, social, photos and some browsing, about 3 to 7 GB a week. The data calculator on this site works it out from how you actually use your phone.
