## Ireland & Slovenia: what to know before you land

Source: https://viasimo.com/destinations/ireland-slovenia/#destination-guide · Researched October 2026 by Viasimo

This plan covers the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia on one eSIM, using Vodafone and Three in Ireland and A1, Telemach and Telekom Slovenije's network in Slovenia. Both have good 4G and growing 5G in towns. Watch the borders: Northern Ireland, Italy, Austria and Croatia are not included, and Slovenia's resorts sit very close to them.

### Ireland & Slovenia: quick facts

| Fact | Ireland & Slovenia |
| --- | --- |
| Emergency number | 112 in both countries; 999 also works in Ireland |
| Main airports | Dublin Airport (DUB); Shannon Airport (SNN); Cork Airport (ORK); Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) |
| Plug types | Type G, C, F (230V) |
| Currency | Euro (EUR) |
| Apps worth having | FREENOW, Uber, Leap Card, WhatsApp, Google Maps |

### Donegal, Derry and the Northern Ireland border

(Ireland & Slovenia · https://viasimo.com/destinations/ireland-slovenia/#guide-donegal-derry-and-the-northern-ireland-border)

The biggest trap on the Irish side is that Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, and the UK is not on this plan. Many Ireland itineraries include Belfast, the Giant's Causeway or Derry, and the border between the Republic and Northern Ireland is open, with no checks, so it is easy to cross without noticing.

Once you are in Northern Ireland, your phone will pick up UK networks and the eSIM will stop carrying data. Near the border, in places like Dundalk, Lifford, Muff, Belcoo or Pettigo, you might also find your phone choosing a UK network even while you are still in the Republic. If data stops near the border, open your network settings, turn off automatic selection and choose Vodafone or Three Ireland.

If you are spending a day or more in Belfast or on the Causeway Coast, use hotel and café wifi or add a UK plan for those days. On the Dublin–Belfast Enterprise train, expect the eSIM to stop working shortly after Dundalk.

### Lake Bled, the Soča valley and Postojna Cave

(Ireland & Slovenia · https://viasimo.com/destinations/ireland-slovenia/#guide-lake-bled-the-soca-valley-and-postojna-cave)

Slovenia's most-visited sights are well served by mobile networks, with some exceptions. Lake Bled and Bohinj have good coverage along the shore and in the villages, although the trails up to viewpoints like Ojstrica and Vogel's upper slopes can be patchy.

The Soča valley, around Bovec and Kobarid, is popular for rafting, hiking and the Kozjak waterfall. Coverage is fine in the towns but weak in the deeper gorges and on the Vršič pass road, which climbs to over 1,600 metres between Kranjska Gora and Trenta. In Triglav National Park, signal at mountain huts varies a lot, so check weather and hut bookings before you set off.

At Postojna Cave, the visitor route covers about 5 km, 3.5 km of it by an underground train, in a cave system of more than 24 km. Do not expect mobile signal inside. The same applies to the Škocjan Caves nearby. Take your photos offline and upload them when you are back outside.

### Piran, Kranjska Gora and Nova Gorica: Slovenia's border towns

(Ireland & Slovenia · https://viasimo.com/destinations/ireland-slovenia/#guide-piran-kranjska-gora-and-nova-gorica-slovenia-s-border-towns)

Slovenia is small, and many places visitors stay are within a few kilometres of a border. Italy, Austria, Croatia and Hungary are all outside this plan, which matters in three common situations.

On the coast, Piran, Portorož and Koper face the Gulf of Trieste, and phones near the water can pick up Italian or Croatian networks across the bay. Day trips to Trieste or to Croatia's Istrian coast, such as Rovinj, will leave you without data on this plan.

In the north, Kranjska Gora sits close to both the Austrian and Italian borders, and ski areas or hikes there can drift into Austrian or Italian coverage. At Nova Gorica, the town runs straight into Gorizia in Italy, with a shared square at the old railway station.

If data stops near any of these borders, switch network selection to manual and choose a Slovenian network. For a planned day trip across the border, use wifi or add a plan for that country.

## Ten days in Ireland and Slovenia: Dublin, Galway, Ljubljana, Bled, the Karst caves and Piran

Multi-country route · 10 days · Source: https://viasimo.com/destinations/ireland-slovenia/#itinerary

Two small countries joined by one flight connection: four days in Dublin and the Irish west coast, then six in Slovenia moving from Ljubljana to the Julian Alps lakes, down through the Karst caves to the Adriatic town of Piran.

**When to go:** Late May to September suits both halves, with long Irish evenings and warm Slovenian lakes; July and August are busiest at Bled and Piran, while September is quieter and still mild.

### Day 1 in Ireland & Slovenia: Dublin: Trinity College and Georgian Dublin

- **Base:** Dublin
- **Plan:** See the Book of Kells and the Long Room at Trinity College, then walk Grafton Street to St Stephen's Green and the Georgian squares around Merrion Square. In the afternoon, visit the National Museum of Archaeology on Kildare Street. Finish with an evening along the Liffey quays and the Ha'penny Bridge.
- **Mobile signal:** Strong 4G and 5G on Vodafone or Three across central Dublin.

### Day 2 in Ireland & Slovenia: Dublin: Kilmainham and Howth

- **Base:** Dublin
- **Plan:** Book ahead for a guided tour of Kilmainham Gaol, then walk to the Guinness Storehouse or visit Christchurch and St Patrick's cathedrals. In the late afternoon, take the DART along Dublin Bay to Howth and walk the cliff path round the headland, returning for dinner by the harbour.
- **Mobile signal:** Good across Dublin and on the DART; the Howth cliff path is mostly covered with a few weak spots below the cliffs.

### Day 3 in Ireland & Slovenia: Galway and the Cliffs of Moher

- **Base:** Galway
- **Getting there:** Irish Rail or coach from Dublin, about 2.5 hours.
- **Plan:** Take an early train or coach to Galway, then join a day tour or local bus through the Burren's limestone country to the Cliffs of Moher, walking the cliff path for the views. Back in Galway, wander the Latin Quarter, Quay Street and the Spanish Arch in the evening.
- **Mobile signal:** Good on the motorway and in Galway; patchy across the Burren and along parts of the cliff path. Do not drive north into Northern Ireland on this plan: it is not covered.

### Day 4 in Ireland & Slovenia: Connemara

- **Base:** Galway
- **Plan:** Drive or take a tour west through Connemara, past Lough Corrib and Maam Cross to Kylemore Abbey and its Victorian walled garden. Continue to Clifden and the Sky Road loop for the Atlantic views. Return to Galway, or stay near Dublin Airport ready for tomorrow's early flight.
- **Mobile signal:** Connemara has long stretches with weak or no signal, especially between Maam Cross and Clifden; download an offline map in Galway.

### Day 5 in Ireland & Slovenia: Fly to Ljubljana

- **Base:** Ljubljana
- **Getting there:** Flights via a European hub, typically 4 to 6 hours including the connection. Airport shuttle or bus to the city, about 30 to 45 minutes.
- **Plan:** Fly from Dublin to Ljubljana, usually with one change at a hub such as London, Frankfurt, Munich or Zurich; check for any seasonal direct flights. In the evening, walk through the old town along the Ljubljanica river, crossing the Triple Bridge and the Dragon Bridge, and see Prešeren Square.
- **Mobile signal:** Your eSIM will not carry data during a transit stop in the UK, Germany or Switzerland, which are not on this plan. On landing, your phone joins A1, Telemach or Telekom Slovenije.

### Day 6 in Ireland & Slovenia: Ljubljana: the castle and the central market

- **Base:** Ljubljana
- **Plan:** Start at the Central Market and the Plečnik arcades, then take the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle for the view towards the Alps. In the afternoon, walk through Tivoli Park and visit the Plečnik House or the National Gallery. Have dinner along the river embankments.
- **Mobile signal:** Good 4G and growing 5G throughout the city, including on the castle hill.

### Day 7 in Ireland & Slovenia: Lake Bled and the Vintgar Gorge

- **Base:** Bled
- **Getting there:** Bus from Ljubljana to Bled, about 1 hour 20 minutes.
- **Plan:** Take the bus to Bled. Walk the Vintgar Gorge boardwalks in the morning, then walk round the lake and take a pletna boat to the island church. Climb up to Bled Castle in the late afternoon for the view of the island, and try the local cream cake.
- **Mobile signal:** Good around the lake and in Bled; weaker in the depths of the Vintgar Gorge.

### Day 8 in Ireland & Slovenia: Lake Bohinj and the Savica waterfall

- **Base:** Bled
- **Getting there:** Bus from Bled to Bohinj, about 40 minutes.
- **Plan:** Take the bus to Lake Bohinj inside Triglav National Park. Walk to the Savica waterfall, then ride the Vogel cable car for views over the lake and the Julian Alps. Spend the afternoon walking the lake's quiet north shore or swimming, and return to Bled in the evening.
- **Mobile signal:** Good in Ribčev Laz and at the cable car stations; patchy on the Savica path and the north shore. If you head over the Vršič Pass, your phone may pick up Italian or Austrian networks, which are not covered.

### Day 9 in Ireland & Slovenia: Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle

- **Base:** Piran
- **Getting there:** Train or bus from Ljubljana or Bled to Postojna, then onward by bus or car to Piran, about 1.5 hours.
- **Plan:** Travel south to Postojna Cave and ride the underground train into its chambers, then visit Predjama Castle, built into a cliff face nearby. Continue to the coast in the late afternoon and walk Piran's Tartini Square and the harbour.
- **Mobile signal:** No signal inside Postojna Cave, so save your tickets first. Good in Piran's old town.

### Day 10 in Ireland & Slovenia: Piran and the Slovenian coast

- **Base:** Piran
- **Plan:** Climb the bell tower of St George's Church and walk the town walls for the view over the Gulf of Trieste. In the afternoon, visit the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park salt pans or walk the coastal path to Strunjan's cliffs. Return to Ljubljana Airport, about two hours away, for your flight home.
- **Mobile signal:** Good in Piran, but near the borders your phone may latch onto an Italian or Croatian network, which this plan does not cover. If data stops, choose a Slovenian network manually.

### Staying connected on this Ireland & Slovenia route

- Northern Ireland, Italy, Austria and Croatia are not on this plan; near those borders, set network selection to manual and pick an Irish or Slovenian network.
- Download your boarding passes before connecting through a hub such as London or Frankfurt, where this eSIM will not carry data.
- Save tickets for Postojna Cave and the Vintgar Gorge offline; neither has reliable signal at the entrance queues or underground.

## About this eSIM

### An unusual pairing, and when it makes sense

Ireland and Slovenia are not neighbours, so this plan suits a specific kind of trip: a holiday that splits time between the two, a business trip to Dublin and Ljubljana, or someone based in one visiting the other. Travel between them is by air, typically with a connection elsewhere in Europe, and the eSIM simply wakes up on a local partner when you land. If your connection is in London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Zurich, remember that those countries are not on this plan, so the layover will be offline unless you use airport wifi.

Ljubljana's airport sits about 25 km north of the city with limited public transport, so having data on landing makes it easier to book a transfer or check the shuttle times. At Dublin, several coach and bus services run into the city from outside both terminals, and you can check live departures as you walk out of arrivals.

### Ireland's networks and where they thin out

In Ireland the plan can use Vodafone and Three. In Opensignal's January 2026 Ireland report, the two tied for the top score on Coverage Experience at 8.35 out of 10, ahead of eir. Three had the fastest average download speed, while Vodafone spent the least time on 5G of the three operators. In practical terms, Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick are well covered, as are the motorways between them.

The weaker areas are in the west and north-west. Connemara, the Beara and Dingle peninsulas, the Burren, parts of the Ring of Kerry and much of Donegal have valleys and coastal stretches where you will drop to weak 4G or no service. The Aran Islands, Skellig Michael boat trips and the ferries to the islands off Donegal and Mayo lose signal for at least part of the way.

### Slovenia's networks and the Alps

In Slovenia the plan can use Telekom Slovenije's network, which still shows as Mobitel on some phones, plus A1 and Telemach. Telekom Slovenije is the largest operator, with all three running 4G and 5G. Ljubljana, Maribor, Bled, Bohinj, Piran and the motorways are well covered.

Coverage gets weaker in the Julian Alps and the deep valleys of the Soča, Trenta and upper Savinja. The Vršič pass road, with its 50 hairpins, has patchy signal on the higher sections, and mountain huts in Triglav National Park often have little or none.

### What you'll use data for

In Ireland, many visitors drive the Wild Atlantic Way or the Ring of Kerry, so navigation is the big use. Uber in Dublin mostly books licensed taxis rather than private drivers, and FREENOW is widely used for taxis across Irish cities. Leap Card and contactless payment work on Dublin buses, trams and DART trains.

In Slovenia, the train and bus timetables are online, and many hikers check weather and hut availability on their phones before heading into the mountains. Card payment is common in Ljubljana, but some mountain huts and smaller guesthouses prefer cash.

### Before you fly

Download offline maps for western Ireland and the Julian Alps. Note that Ireland drives on the left and Slovenia on the right, and that Slovenian motorways need an e-vignette, which you buy online before you drive. Keep your home SIM active for bank texts and for any call you need to make, as this eSIM is data only.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does an eSIM work in Ireland & Slovenia?

Yes. Your Ireland & Slovenia eSIM connects automatically the moment you arrive, with no roaming fees and nothing to set up at the airport. Coverage runs on 4G LTE and 5G where the network has rolled it out, and falls back to 4G elsewhere.

### Do I get 5G in Ireland & Slovenia?

Yes, where it has been deployed. 5G runs on The local networks we use in Ireland & Slovenia, and your eSIM uses it automatically on a 5G-capable phone, dropping back to 4G LTE outside covered areas. No country is covered everywhere, so 5G availability varies by location.

### Will this eSIM work in Belfast or at the Giant's Causeway?

No. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, which is not on this plan. The border from the Republic is open with no checks, so you may not notice crossing it, but your data will stop once your phone attaches to a UK network. Use wifi or add a UK plan for days in Belfast, Derry or along the Causeway Coast.

### Which Irish network has the best coverage?

In Opensignal's January 2026 Ireland report, Three and Vodafone tied for first on Coverage Experience with 8.35 out of 10, ahead of eir. This plan can use both Three and Vodafone. Three also had the fastest average download speed. Coverage is strongest in cities and along motorways, and weakest in parts of Connemara, Kerry and Donegal.

### Does the plan work on a day trip from Slovenia to Trieste, Venice or Croatia?

No. Only Slovenia and the Republic of Ireland are covered, so Italy, Croatia and Austria are outside this plan. On the Slovenian coast at Piran or Koper, your phone may also pick up Italian or Croatian signal across the water. If data stops, choose a Slovenian network manually in your phone settings.

### Is there mobile signal inside Postojna Cave?

You should not expect any. The tour route at Postojna is about 5 km long, including 3.5 km on an underground train, and runs deep inside a cave system of more than 24 km. The nearby Škocjan Caves are similar. Buy tickets and save any information you need before you go in, and upload your photos afterwards.

### How much data do I need for 30 days in Ireland & Slovenia?

For 30 days in Ireland & Slovenia, Viasimo sells 1 GB for $2.00, 3 GB for $4.79, 5 GB for $8.00, and 10 GB for $15.00. Our sizing recommendation, not a measurement: maps, messaging and the occasional lookup, about 1 GB a week; maps, social, photos and some browsing, about 3 to 7 GB a week. The data calculator on this site works it out from how you actually use your phone.
