## Caribbean: what to know before you land

Source: https://viasimo.com/destinations/caribbean/#destination-guide · Researched October 2026 by Viasimo

A Caribbean plan is built for island-hopping and cruise port days, where every island is a different country with its own network. On most covered islands you will connect to Digicel, FLOW or Claro, with good 4G in towns and resort areas. Signal stops at sea, and several big cruise stops, including the Bahamas and the US Virgin Islands, are not on this plan.

### Caribbean: quick facts

| Fact | Caribbean |
| --- | --- |
| Emergency number | 911 in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and several islands; 119 (police) in Jamaica; varies elsewhere |
| Main airports | Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, San Juan (SJU); Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ); Sangster International Airport, Montego Bay (MBJ); Grantley Adams International Airport, Barbados (BGI); V. C. Bird International Airport, Antigua (ANU) |
| Plug types | Type A, B, G, C, E (110–120V on many islands; 220–240V on others) |
| Currency | US dollar, Eastern Caribbean dollar, euro and several local currencies |
| Apps worth having | WhatsApp, Uber, Google Maps, Windy |

### Cruise port days: what the plan covers and what it doesn't

(Caribbean · https://viasimo.com/destinations/caribbean/#guide-cruise-port-days-what-the-plan-covers-and-what-it-doesn-t)

On a Caribbean cruise, the eSIM is most useful in port. When the ship docks in places such as San Juan, St Kitts, Antigua, Barbados, St Lucia, Grand Cayman, Grand Turk or Montego Bay, the phone connects to a land network, and you can use maps, ride apps and messaging for the day. Give it a few minutes after the ship arrives.

It does not help at sea. Once the ship is a few kilometres offshore, the land signal fades and your phone may try to join the ship's own maritime network instead, which is a separate paid service. Put the eSIM line on manual network selection or switch off roaming while sailing.

Several common ports are not covered, including Nassau and the private islands in the Bahamas, Cozumel in Mexico, St Thomas and St Croix in the US Virgin Islands, Aruba and Martinique. On those days, use the ship's wifi or a café connection. Tender ports, where you are taken ashore by small boat, sometimes have weaker coverage at the landing point than in the town itself.

### Island-hopping in the Leeward and Windward Islands

(Caribbean · https://viasimo.com/destinations/caribbean/#guide-island-hopping-in-the-leeward-and-windward-islands)

Many independent travellers hop down the Eastern Caribbean by small plane or ferry, for example Antigua to St Kitts and Nevis, or St Lucia to St Vincent, Bequia and Grenada. Most of these islands are covered, and on each one you will be on Digicel or FLOW.

When you arrive on a new island, the phone needs to find the new network. On short inter-island flights this is usually quick; after a ferry, it can take a little longer if you stayed on the previous island's signal while leaving. Toggling airplane mode once usually fixes it.

Ferries around Guadeloupe and Dominica are popular, but the fast ferries between Guadeloupe and St Lucia also call at Martinique, which is not on this plan, so expect no data while stopped there. In the Grenadines, the islands between St Vincent and Grenada are spread out, and day sails to the Tobago Cays leave land coverage behind. Grenada's sister islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique were badly damaged by Hurricane Beryl in 2024, so check current conditions before going.

### Jamaica and the Dominican Republic after the storms

(Caribbean · https://viasimo.com/destinations/caribbean/#guide-jamaica-and-the-dominican-republic-after-the-storms)

Jamaica and the Dominican Republic are two of the busiest destinations on this plan. In Jamaica you will usually be on Digicel or FLOW. Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios and Kingston normally have good 4G, while the Blue Mountains and the Cockpit Country interior are much weaker.

Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica in October 2025 and caused heavy damage in the western parishes. The UK Foreign Office advice, last updated in May 2026, said some communities there were still without electricity and piped water. Resort areas recovered first, but if you are travelling beyond them, check with your accommodation about power and connectivity.

In the Dominican Republic, Claro is the largest operator. Coverage is strong in Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, Bávaro and Puerto Plata, and along the main highways, with weaker signal in the mountainous interior. Uber operates in Santo Domingo and Punta Cana, which makes it easier to avoid negotiating taxi fares.

## Ten days island-hopping from Barbados to Grenada via St Lucia and the Grenadines

Multi-country route · 10 days · Source: https://viasimo.com/destinations/caribbean/#itinerary

A southern Caribbean route for independent island-hoppers: Barbados and St Lucia linked by a short flight, then St Vincent and the Grenadines by inter-island ferry from Kingstown to Bequia and Union Island, and on by boat to Carriacou and Grenada.

**When to go:** December to April is the dry season with the calmest seas for small ferries; June to November is hurricane season, when storms can cancel boats and flights, and Union Island and Carriacou are still rebuilding after Hurricane Beryl in 2024, so check what has reopened.

### Day 1 in Caribbean: Barbados: Bridgetown and the Garrison

- **Base:** Barbados
- **Plan:** Walk Bridgetown's Parliament Buildings, the Careenage and National Heroes Square, then visit the Garrison area, part of the UNESCO-listed historic zone, and the George Washington House. Spend the late afternoon at Carlisle Bay for a swim, then head to Oistins on a Friday for the fish fry.
- **Mobile signal:** Good 4G on FLOW or Digicel across the south and west coasts and in Bridgetown.

### Day 2 in Caribbean: Barbados: the east coast and Harrison's Cave

- **Base:** Barbados
- **Plan:** Drive or take a tour through the centre of the island to Harrison's Cave, riding the tram through its limestone chambers. Continue to Bathsheba on the Atlantic coast to see the Soup Bowl surf and the rock formations, then stop at St John's Parish Church on the cliffs on the way back.
- **Mobile signal:** No signal inside Harrison's Cave; patchy along the east coast road around Bathsheba.

### Day 3 in Caribbean: Fly to St Lucia: Rodney Bay and Pigeon Island

- **Base:** St Lucia
- **Getting there:** Regional flight Barbados to St Lucia, about 45 minutes; check current timetables, as some services use Hewanorra in the south instead.
- **Plan:** Take a short regional flight to St Lucia's George F L Charles Airport near Castries. Visit the Castries market, then go north to Pigeon Island National Landmark for the fort ruins and the view over Rodney Bay. Spend the evening at Gros Islet, especially on a Friday for the street party.
- **Mobile signal:** Your phone switches to a St Lucian Digicel or FLOW network on landing. Good 4G around Castries and Rodney Bay.

### Day 4 in Caribbean: St Lucia: Soufrière and the Pitons

- **Base:** St Lucia
- **Plan:** Drive or take a boat down the west coast to Soufrière. See the Pitons, a UNESCO site, from the viewpoints above town, visit the Sulphur Springs drive-in volcano and mud baths, and swim at Sugar Beach between the two peaks. Return north along the coast road through Anse La Raye and Canaries.
- **Mobile signal:** Good in Soufrière; patchy on the winding west-coast road and in the rainforest valleys.

### Day 5 in Caribbean: St Vincent and the ferry to Bequia

- **Base:** Bequia
- **Getting there:** Regional flight St Lucia to St Vincent, about 40 minutes; ferry Kingstown to Bequia, about 1 hour.
- **Plan:** Fly to St Vincent's Argyle Airport. In Kingstown, visit the Botanical Gardens, among the oldest in the Americas, and Fort Charlotte for the view over the Grenadines. Take the afternoon ferry to Bequia and walk Port Elizabeth's harbourfront at dusk.
- **Mobile signal:** Your phone joins a Vincentian network on landing. Expect a short gap mid-channel on the ferry; good in Port Elizabeth.

### Day 6 in Caribbean: Bequia: beaches and the turtle sanctuary

- **Base:** Bequia
- **Plan:** Walk the Belmont Walkway from Port Elizabeth to Princess Margaret Beach and Lower Bay. In the afternoon, take a taxi to the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary on the north-east coast and Mount Pleasant for the island view. Bequia has a long whaling and boatbuilding history, shown in the model-boat workshops in town.
- **Mobile signal:** Good around Port Elizabeth and the western beaches; weaker on the north-east coast.

### Day 7 in Caribbean: South to Union Island

- **Base:** Union Island
- **Getting there:** Jaden Sun from Bequia to Union Island, about 2 hours with stops.
- **Plan:** Take the Jaden Sun fast ferry south through the Grenadines, past Canouan and Mayreau, to Clifton on Union Island. In the afternoon, take a boat out to the Tobago Cays marine park to snorkel with turtles. Clear Vincentian customs and immigration in Clifton before tomorrow's crossing to Grenada's islands.
- **Mobile signal:** Gaps between islands on the ferry. Some signal in Clifton; little or none in the Tobago Cays.

### Day 8 in Caribbean: Boat to Carriacou

- **Base:** Carriacou
- **Getting there:** Local ferry from Union Island to Carriacou, about 1 hour; check sailing days, which have been Monday and Friday.
- **Plan:** Take the local ferry from Union Island to Carriacou, which runs only on certain days, and clear Grenadian immigration in Hillsborough. In the afternoon, take a water taxi to Sandy Island for snorkelling, or walk to Paradise Beach at L'Esterre.
- **Mobile signal:** Your phone switches to a Grenadian network. Coverage in Carriacou is basic and may still be affected by hurricane damage.

### Day 9 in Caribbean: Osprey ferry to Grenada: St George's

- **Base:** Grenada
- **Getting there:** Osprey Lines from Carriacou to St George's, about 1.5 to 2 hours. Osprey has not always sailed daily, so check its timetable against the Union Island ferry days; you may need an extra night on Carriacou or a short flight.
- **Plan:** Take the Osprey Lines ferry to St George's. Walk the Carenage harbour and climb to Fort George for the view of the town's red roofs. Visit the Grenada National Museum and the Market Square, then try a spice tour or a nutmeg processing station in Gouyave if time allows.
- **Mobile signal:** Gaps mid-crossing; good 4G in St George's.

### Day 10 in Caribbean: Grand Anse and the underwater sculpture park

- **Base:** Grenada
- **Plan:** Spend the morning on Grand Anse Beach. Take a boat or glass-bottom trip to the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park, or walk to the waterfalls at Annandale or Seven Sisters in the Grand Etang Forest Reserve. Fly home from Maurice Bishop International Airport, which is near Grand Anse.
- **Mobile signal:** Good at Grand Anse; weak or none on the Seven Sisters trail and in the Grand Etang forest.

### Staying connected on this Caribbean route

- Save every ferry timetable and ticket offline before boarding; the channels between islands have no land signal, and some ships offer a separate, paid maritime network.
- Check which Grenadines ferries and services are running before you go; Hurricane Beryl caused heavy damage on Union Island and Carriacou.
- The Bahamas and the US Virgin Islands are not on this plan, so check the covered list if you add a cruise or connecting flight.

## About this eSIM

### Landing in Puerto Rico, Punta Cana, Montego Bay or Barbados

Most Caribbean trips start at a regional hub: San Juan (SJU), Punta Cana (PUJ) or Santo Domingo (SDQ), Montego Bay (MBJ), Barbados (BGI) or Antigua (ANU). Turn off airplane mode as you taxi in and the eSIM will attach to a local partner. On the smaller islands the arrivals hall can be busy and wifi limited, so having data before you reach the taxi rank helps when you need to message your villa host or check a transfer.

The English-speaking islands are dominated by two operators, Digicel and FLOW (part of Liberty Latin America), with Claro the largest operator in the Dominican Republic and also present in Puerto Rico. Your phone will usually show one of these names as you move between islands.

### Why the Caribbean is different from other regions

In most regional plans you cross land borders. Here almost every move is by sea or air, and each island is its own market with its own towers. That has three consequences.

First, coverage is excellent near towns and resort strips but thin in the mountainous interiors of islands such as Dominica, St Lucia and the north of Jamaica, and on small outlying cays.

Second, being near another island can confuse your phone. Between the British and US Virgin Islands, or around St Martin, a phone may pick up the stronger signal from a neighbouring territory. If that territory is not on the covered list, data simply stops. Select a network manually in your phone settings if this happens.

Third, there is nothing to connect to at sea. On ferries and sailing trips you lose land signal a few kilometres offshore. Cruise ships run their own onboard mobile service, which is billed separately and is not part of this plan, so keep data roaming off on the eSIM between ports unless you are sure what you are connected to.

### Hurricanes and network damage

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, according to the US National Hurricane Center, with activity peaking around mid-September. Major storms can take down power and mobile networks for days or weeks. Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica in October 2025, and the UK Foreign Office was still warning in 2026 that some communities in the western parishes were without electricity and piped water. Grenada's outer islands were badly hit by Hurricane Beryl in 2024.

If you travel in late summer or autumn, follow local news, download offline maps and keep important documents on your phone rather than in the cloud. After a storm, coverage in resort areas tends to return first.

### Before you fly

Compare your exact islands and cruise ports against the covered list, because this plan includes some territories but not others. The Bahamas, Aruba, Trinidad and Tobago, the US Virgin Islands, Martinique and Cuba are among the places not on it.

The list also includes several South American countries, which is useful if you are combining the islands with Colombia's Caribbean coast or a trip to Brazil or Peru. Cartagena and Santa Marta are a common add-on to an Eastern Caribbean trip.

WhatsApp is the default way to talk to taxi drivers, dive shops, guesthouses and tour operators across the islands, so make sure it is set up and verified on your home number before you leave.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does an eSIM work in Caribbean?

Yes. Your Caribbean eSIM connects automatically the moment you arrive, with no roaming fees and nothing to set up at the airport. Coverage runs on 4G LTE and 5G where the network has rolled it out, and falls back to 4G elsewhere.

### Do I get 5G in Caribbean?

Yes, where it has been deployed. 5G runs on The local networks we use in Caribbean, and your eSIM uses it automatically on a 5G-capable phone, dropping back to 4G LTE outside covered areas. No country is covered everywhere, so 5G availability varies by location.

### Does the Caribbean eSIM work in the Bahamas or the US Virgin Islands?

No. Neither the Bahamas nor the US Virgin Islands is on this plan's covered list, even though Nassau, the Bahamian private islands and St Thomas are among the most common cruise stops. On those days you will need ship wifi, a café connection or a separate plan. Check every port on your itinerary against the list before you buy.

### Will my phone use data while my cruise ship is at sea?

Not on this plan. Once the ship is a few kilometres from land, there is no land network to connect to. Many ships run their own maritime mobile service, which is a separate and usually expensive service. To avoid accidental charges, switch off roaming on the eSIM and your home line while sailing, or set network selection to manual.

### Which networks will I use on the Caribbean islands?

Mostly Digicel and FLOW on the English-speaking islands, and Claro, which also operates in Puerto Rico, in the Dominican Republic. These are the main operators across the region, and your phone will show their names as you move between islands. Coverage is strong in towns and resort areas, and weaker in mountainous interiors and on small outlying islands.

### Is mobile coverage in Jamaica back to normal after Hurricane Melissa?

In the main resort areas, mostly yes, but recovery in the hardest-hit western parishes has been slower. The UK Foreign Office advice updated in May 2026 still noted that some communities there lacked electricity and piped water. If you are staying outside Montego Bay, Negril or Ocho Rios resorts, ask your host about power and signal before you arrive.

### When is hurricane season in the Caribbean, and how does it affect connectivity?

The Atlantic season officially runs from 1 June to 30 November, with peak activity around mid-September. A direct hit can knock out power and mobile towers for days or longer. If you travel in late summer or autumn, save your bookings and maps offline and keep an eye on National Hurricane Center updates.

### How much data do I need for 7 days in Caribbean?

For 7 days in Caribbean, Viasimo sells 1 GB for $10.99 and unlimited data for $65.99. Our sizing recommendation, not a measurement: maps, messaging and the occasional lookup, about 1 GB a week; maps, social, photos and some browsing, about 3 to 7 GB a week. The data calculator on this site works it out from how you actually use your phone.
