## Caribbean Netherlands: what to know before you land

Source: https://viasimo.com/destinations/bonaire/#destination-guide · Researched October 2026 by Viasimo

Bonaire has two mobile networks, Digicel and Flow (the former UTS, still branded Chippie locally), and this eSIM connects to the UTS network on 4G LTE. Signal is solid around Kralendijk and the west coast, patchy inside Washington Slagbaai National Park and absent on uninhabited Klein Bonaire. There are no SIM cards on sale at Flamingo Airport.

### Caribbean Netherlands: quick facts

| Fact | Caribbean Netherlands |
| --- | --- |
| Emergency number | 911 police, 912 ambulance, 919 fire, 913 coast guard |
| Main airports | Flamingo International Airport (BON) |
| Plug types | Type A, B, C, F (127V (A/B sockets) and 220V (C/F sockets), 50Hz) |
| Currency | US dollar (USD) |
| Apps worth having | WhatsApp, Google Maps, Windy, Facebook |

### Digicel and Flow on Kaya Grandi: Bonaire's two networks

(Caribbean Netherlands · https://viasimo.com/destinations/bonaire/#guide-digicel-and-flow-on-kaya-grandi-bonaire-s-two-networks)

Bonaire has two mobile operators. **Digicel** has run here since 2006, when it took over the local company Antilliano Por, and its network supports LTE and LTE-Advanced. **Flow**, also known by its older brand Chippie, is the former UTS network that now belongs to Liberty Latin America. Bonaire's original local telco, Telbo, also sold mobile service under the Kla brand.

This eSIM uses the UTS (Flow) network on 4G LTE. That is relevant if you compare notes with a dive buddy on a Digicel SIM: you share no masts, so one of you may have a signal where the other doesn't, particularly away from Kralendijk.

If you prefer a local SIM, you'll have to go to town: the Digicel shop is at Kaya Grandi 26 and Flow's is next door at 32, and there is no SIM counter at Flamingo Airport. Shop opening hours are limited at weekends, so a Saturday-evening arrival can mean a day without data. Hotels, cafés and restaurants in Kralendijk generally have wifi, and the public library and city hall offer it free, but speeds drop when a busy restaurant fills up.

### Washington Slagbaai National Park and the east coast

(Caribbean Netherlands · https://viasimo.com/destinations/bonaire/#guide-washington-slagbaai-national-park-and-the-east-coast)

**Washington Slagbaai National Park** covers the northern end of the island, with rough dirt loops, hiking trails up Brandaris and remote bays such as Boka Slagbaai. Coverage there is patchy and parts of the park have no signal at all, so treat a day in the park as an offline day.

- Download the park map and your planned route before you drive in.
- Tell someone at your hotel or dive shop which loop you are taking and when you expect to be back.
- Carry plenty of water and a charged phone; the park roads are slow and help can take time to reach you.
- Check the park's opening hours and last entry time before setting off, because they are strictly applied.

The windward east coast is also emptier than the west, and the signal can weaken along the long stretches of coast road between settlements. The west coast from Kralendijk north towards the oil terminal and on to Rincon is reasonably consistent, which covers the bulk of the famous shore dive sites. If you are heading out on a remote stretch, send your location to a travel companion on WhatsApp before you lose signal.

### Klein Bonaire and dive boats: no masts offshore

(Caribbean Netherlands · https://viasimo.com/destinations/bonaire/#guide-klein-bonaire-and-dive-boats-no-masts-offshore)

**Klein Bonaire**, the small flat island facing Kralendijk, is uninhabited and has no mobile masts. Any signal you get there is spillover from Bonaire, and on the far side of the island, facing away from town, you should expect nothing. Water taxis run across to No Name Beach; confirm your return pick-up time with the operator before you leave, because you won't be able to change it from the beach.

The same applies on dive boats once they pass the headlands. Before a boat dive:

- Share the boat name and departure time with someone ashore.
- Leave your phone in a dry bag, with booking details and emergency contacts saved offline.
- Know that the coast guard is reached on **913** for emergencies at sea, separate from police (911) and ambulance (912).

All of Bonaire's waters are part of the Bonaire National Marine Park, so every diver and snorkeller, including those on a single trip to Klein Bonaire, needs the STINAPA Nature Fee. Buy it online before your trip and keep the confirmation on your phone in case a ranger asks to see it.

### Paying the Visitor Entry Tax and STINAPA Nature Fee

(Caribbean Netherlands · https://viasimo.com/destinations/bonaire/#guide-paying-the-visitor-entry-tax-and-stinapa-nature-fee)

Two fees catch out first-time visitors, and both are easiest to handle on your phone before you fly.

The **Visitor Entry Tax** has applied since July 2022. It is USD 75 per person aged 13 and over and USD 10 for children of 12 and under, with cruise passengers' fees settled by the cruise line. You can pay online at the government's tourism tax site, which opens seven days before your arrival, or at the Entry Tax counter at Flamingo Airport. Only cards are accepted, not cash. Payment produces a QR code that the Tourism Corporation Bonaire says is valid for 30 days from first use, so a side trip to Curaçao or Aruba within that window doesn't mean paying again.

The **STINAPA Nature Fee** is USD 40 and covers both the marine park and Washington Slagbaai National Park. It runs by calendar year, from 1 January to 31 December, whatever date you buy it, so a December trip and a January trip need two fees. Pay through STINAPA's website.

Store both QR codes as screenshots or in your phone's wallet, so you can show them even when you have no signal.

## Seven days on Bonaire: Kralendijk, Washington Slagbaai, Klein Bonaire and Lac Bay

7-day itinerary · 7 days · Source: https://viasimo.com/destinations/bonaire/#itinerary

A week for snorkellers, shore divers and anyone who likes a quiet island with a pick-up truck: west-coast reefs, the rugged national park in the north, uninhabited Klein Bonaire, the salt pans of the south and windsurfing on Lac Bay.

**When to go:** Bonaire sits below the main hurricane belt and is dry and windy all year; the trade winds are strongest from May to August, which suits windsurfers at Lac Bay, while October and November are the calmest months on the reef.

### Day 1 in Caribbean Netherlands: Arrive and walk Kralendijk

- **Base:** Kralendijk
- **Getting there:** The airport is about 5 minutes' drive south of Kralendijk.
- **Plan:** Land at Flamingo International Airport, pick up your hire car or truck and buy the STINAPA Nature Fee online if you have not already, since you need it to snorkel, dive or enter the national park. Walk the seafront in Kralendijk, Kaya Grandi and the small Fort Oranje by the harbour. Finish with a first easy snorkel from the shore along the town waterfront.
- **Mobile signal:** This eSIM uses the UTS network on 4G LTE, which is strong at the airport and around Kralendijk; there are no SIM cards sold at the airport, so make sure the eSIM is active before you fly.

### Day 2 in Caribbean Netherlands: Shore snorkelling on the west coast

- **Base:** Kralendijk
- **Getting there:** 1000 Steps is about 15 minutes' drive north of Kralendijk.
- **Plan:** Drive north along the coast road, following the yellow-painted stones that mark the shore dive and snorkel sites. Snorkel at 1000 Steps, which in fact has about 70 limestone steps down to the water, then at Karpata further north. Look for sea turtles, parrotfish and tarpon over healthy coral. Return via Gotomeer, a saltwater lagoon where you often see flamingos feeding.
- **Mobile signal:** 4G usually reaches the coast road north of town, but it weakens towards Karpata and Gotomeer as the hills close in; download an offline map of the island before leaving.

### Day 3 in Caribbean Netherlands: Washington Slagbaai National Park

- **Base:** Kralendijk
- **Getting there:** Rincon and the park entrance are about 30 minutes' drive north of Kralendijk. The park is closed on Mondays, and last entry is at 2.30pm.
- **Plan:** Go in a 4WD and arrive at the park gate near Rincon at 8am. If you want to climb Mount Brandaris, at 241 m the island's highest point, start before 10am; the steep trail takes about 45 minutes up and climbing is allowed only until noon. Then drive the long route past the blowholes on the windward coast to Boka Slagbaai, with its old salt buildings and flamingos. Take water and food: the park has no facilities.
- **Mobile signal:** Coverage is patchy inside the park and disappears in the valleys and on stretches of the east coast; tell someone your route and expected exit time.

### Day 4 in Caribbean Netherlands: Klein Bonaire

- **Base:** Kralendijk
- **Getting there:** The water taxi crossing takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
- **Plan:** Take the water taxi from Kralendijk across to Klein Bonaire, an uninhabited islet that is part of the marine park. Spend the day at No Name Beach, snorkelling the drop-off just offshore where the reef falls away steeply. There is no shade or shop, so bring water, food, reef-safe sunscreen and a hat, and check the return time of the last boat before you go ashore.
- **Mobile signal:** There are no masts on Klein Bonaire; you may catch a faint signal from Kralendijk on the beach, but plan on being offline until you return.

### Day 5 in Caribbean Netherlands: The south: salt pans, slave huts and Willemstoren

- **Base:** Kralendijk
- **Getting there:** The southern loop is about 40 km from Kralendijk.
- **Plan:** Drive south past the pink salt pans and white salt mountains of the Cargill works, where flamingos feed in the shallows. Stop at the restored nineteenth-century slave huts near the obelisks once used to signal ships. Continue to Willemstoren, Bonaire's oldest lighthouse at the southern tip, then snorkel at Pink Beach on the way back as the afternoon light softens.
- **Mobile signal:** 4G holds on the flat southern road, though it is thinner near Willemstoren lighthouse; this is a good day to share live location if you are driving alone.

### Day 6 in Caribbean Netherlands: Lac Bay: mangroves and windsurfing

- **Base:** Kralendijk
- **Getting there:** Lac Bay is about 20 minutes' drive from Kralendijk.
- **Plan:** Cross to Lac Bay on the east coast. Join a guided kayak or snorkel tour into the mangroves, a nursery for young reef fish and a protected area. In the afternoon, watch or take a lesson with the windsurfers on the shallow, wind-blown lagoon at Sorobon. On the way back, visit the Donkey Sanctuary, home to hundreds of the island's feral donkeys, if it is open.
- **Mobile signal:** 4G is generally usable at Sorobon, but expect it to drop inside the mangrove channels; keep your phone in a dry bag on the kayak.

### Day 7 in Caribbean Netherlands: Rincon and departure

- **Base:** Kralendijk
- **Getting there:** Rincon is about 25 minutes from Kralendijk and 30 minutes from the airport.
- **Plan:** Spend your last morning in Rincon, Bonaire's oldest village, where you can visit Mangazina di Rei, a cultural park in an old stone storehouse that tells the island's history. Drive back via the Seru Largu lookout for a view across the island to Kralendijk and Klein Bonaire. Return the car and head to Flamingo Airport, remembering the no-flying rule of 18 to 24 hours after your last dive.
- **Mobile signal:** Rincon has usable 4G, and coverage is good again around Kralendijk and the airport for check-in.

### Staying connected on this Caribbean Netherlands route

- Download an offline Google Maps area for the whole island before day 2; the park and east coast have no reliable signal.
- Keep your Nature Fee confirmation saved offline on your phone, as rangers may ask for proof at dive sites and the park gate.
- Klein Bonaire has no masts at all, so note the water-taxi return time and save the operator's number before you cross.

## About this eSIM

Bonaire is a special municipality of the Netherlands, uses the US dollar, and runs on a compact phone market: two operators serving a population of around 25,000 plus the divers who make up much of the island's visitor traffic. Getting connected is simple if you sort it out before you leave home, and awkward if you don't, because there is nowhere at the airport to buy a SIM.

### Landing at Flamingo International Airport (BON)

Flamingo International sits just south of Kralendijk, and most hotels and dive resorts are a short drive away. The terminal does not sell SIM cards, and the nearest operator shops are on Kaya Grandi in town. With the eSIM already installed, switch the line on and enable data roaming for it as you leave the plane, and you can message your car hire company or dive shop before you reach the baggage belt.

Many visitors hire a pick-up truck at the airport because shore diving means carrying tanks between sites. Have the rental voucher saved as a screenshot, plus the hire company's number, in case the desk is busy when several flights land together.

### The network you'll be on

This eSIM connects to the **UTS** network on 4G LTE. UTS was the Curaçao-based operator behind the Chippie brand; it was bought by Liberty Latin America, which completed its takeover in 2019, and it now trades as Flow across the former Netherlands Antilles. On Bonaire the Flow shop is at Kaya Grandi 32, next door to Digicel at number 26. If a local tells you they are on Flow or Chippie, they are on the same network you are.

Both operators offer 4G in Kralendijk and the populated parts of the island, and the leeward west coast towards Rincon is reasonably stable. Bonaire is low and dry in the south, with hills only in the north, so the main limits on signal are distance from a mast and the island's emptier eastern side, rather than terrain.

### What you'll use data for on Bonaire

Most of the island's tourism is built around diving and snorkelling, and that shapes how you use your phone:

- **Shore diving logistics.** Dive sites along the coast road are marked with painted yellow stones, and the free maps from dive shops and the national park pair well with a saved Google Maps layer. Check wind, swell and current forecasts before you load the truck.
- **WhatsApp for everything.** Dive shops, restaurants, kayak and windsurf operators at Lac Bay, and many apartment owners take bookings and confirm changes over WhatsApp.
- **Restaurant bookings in Kralendijk.** Popular waterfront places fill up when cruise ships are in, so reserve ahead.
- **Weather and sea state.** Trade winds blow most of the year, which matters for kitesurfing and windsurfing as much as for diving.

Remember that the eSIM is data only. A local business that only wants to call you on a Bonaire number (+599 7 prefix) will need to reach you through WhatsApp or your home SIM instead.

### Before you fly

Check your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM, install the profile at home, and keep your home SIM active for bank codes and airline texts. Download offline Google Maps for the whole island; it is small enough to cache in one go. Pack a waterproof pouch or dry bag for boat days and a power bank for long shore-diving days away from your accommodation. Save the island's emergency numbers in your contacts, including the coast guard, before you need them.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does an eSIM work in Caribbean Netherlands?

Yes. Your Caribbean Netherlands eSIM connects automatically the moment you arrive, with no roaming fees and nothing to set up at the airport. The host networks it can use are SETAR, UTS Wireless Curacao. Coverage runs on 4G LTE. There is no 5G on our host network in Caribbean Netherlands yet.

### Do I get 5G in Caribbean Netherlands?

No. SETAR, UTS Wireless Curacao do not yet offer 5G to visitors in Caribbean Netherlands, so your eSIM connects over 4G LTE or slower. Anyone claiming 5G for this destination is quoting a spec sheet, not the network you will actually get.

### Can I buy a SIM card at Bonaire airport?

No. Flamingo International Airport has no SIM counter, so you would need to visit the Digicel or Flow shops on Kaya Grandi in Kralendijk during opening hours. Installing this eSIM before you travel means you have 4G data on the UTS (Flow) network as soon as you land, including for messaging your car hire company or dive shop.

### Is there phone signal in Washington Slagbaai National Park?

Only in places. Coverage inside the park is patchy and some remote areas have none, so download the park map and your route beforehand and tell someone which loop you are driving. The west coast road between Kralendijk and Rincon, where most shore dive sites are, has a much more reliable signal.

### Does my phone work on Klein Bonaire?

Don't rely on it. Klein Bonaire is uninhabited and has no masts, so you only pick up whatever signal reaches across from Bonaire, mostly on the side facing Kralendijk. Agree your water-taxi return time before you leave and keep the coast guard number, 913, saved in your phone.

### Do I have to pay a tourist tax to visit Bonaire?

Yes. The Visitor Entry Tax is USD 75 for anyone aged 13 or over and USD 10 for younger children, payable by card online up to seven days before arrival or at Flamingo Airport. Keep the QR code on your phone. Divers and snorkellers also need the separate USD 40 STINAPA Nature Fee.

### Is Bonaire's Flow network the same as Chippie and UTS?

Yes. Chippie was the mobile brand of UTS, a telecoms operator from Curaçao that Liberty Latin America acquired fully in 2019 and now runs as Flow. This eSIM connects to that network on Bonaire using 4G LTE. Digicel is the other operator on the island, with separate masts.

### How much data do I need for 7 days in Caribbean Netherlands?

For 7 days in Caribbean Netherlands, Viasimo sells 1 GB for $9.99 and unlimited data for $124.99. Our sizing recommendation, not a measurement: maps, messaging and the occasional lookup, about 1 GB a week; maps, social, photos and some browsing, about 3 to 7 GB a week. The data calculator on this site works it out from how you actually use your phone.
