## AUKUS(3 countries): what to know before you land

Source: https://viasimo.com/destinations/aukus-3-countries/#destination-guide · Researched October 2026 by Viasimo

This plan covers the UK, the USA and Australia on one eSIM, which suits round-the-world trips, visiting family on two continents, or business travel between London, New York and Sydney. All three have mature 4G and 5G networks in cities; the real gaps are the Scottish Highlands, American national parks and the Australian Outback, plus everything in between airports.

### AUKUS(3 countries): quick facts

| Fact | AUKUS(3 countries) |
| --- | --- |
| Emergency number | 999 (UK), 911 (USA), 000 (Australia); 112 also works from mobiles in the UK and Australia |
| Main airports | London Heathrow Airport (LHR); John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York (JFK); Los Angeles International Airport (LAX); Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD); Melbourne Airport (MEL) |
| Plug types | Type G, A, B, I (230V in the UK and Australia; 120V in the USA) |
| Currency | Pound sterling (GBP), US dollar (USD), Australian dollar (AUD) |
| Apps worth having | Uber, WhatsApp, Citymapper, Lyft, Google Maps |

### UK: O2, Vodafone and Three, from the Tube to the Highlands

(AUKUS(3 countries) · https://viasimo.com/destinations/aukus-3-countries/#guide-uk-o2-vodafone-and-three-from-the-tube-to-the-highlands)

In the UK the plan uses O2, Vodafone and Three. Opensignal's January 2026 UK report gave O2 the top score for Coverage Experience, which is the measure that matters most to visitors moving around the country.

Under London, the Tube is now getting proper mobile coverage. According to ISPreview, more than 60% of the 121 below-ground stations were live by August 2026, with all four UK networks sharing the system and the rest due around the end of 2026. Expect some tunnel sections and stations still without signal.

Outside the cities, coverage gets weaker in the Scottish Highlands, the Lake District fells, Snowdonia and much of rural Wales, where valleys block signal. The West Highland Line and the A82 through Glen Coe both have long gaps. If you are going to Ireland from Britain, note that Ireland is not part of this plan; Northern Ireland is part of the UK and is covered.

### USA: Verizon from Manhattan to the national parks

(AUKUS(3 countries) · https://viasimo.com/destinations/aukus-3-countries/#guide-usa-verizon-from-manhattan-to-the-national-parks)

In the USA the plan uses Verizon, which won Opensignal's Coverage Experience award in January 2026 with 9.7 out of 10, ahead of AT&T and T-Mobile. That makes it a good partner for road trips, even though T-Mobile is faster on average and spends more time on 5G.

The gaps are mostly predictable. Large parts of Yellowstone, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon outside the villages, Death Valley and the Utah parks have little or no signal, and park visitor centres often have the best reception for miles. Long desert stretches in Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico can go quiet between towns. Cruise passengers leaving from Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Seattle lose land signal not long after leaving port, and most Caribbean and Alaskan ports of call outside the USA are not covered.

For apps, Uber and Lyft work in nearly every city, and many restaurants and tours expect you to book or pay through an app. Use Google Maps offline areas for national park roads before you lose signal.

### Australia: Optus beyond Sydney and Melbourne

(AUKUS(3 countries) · https://viasimo.com/destinations/aukus-3-countries/#guide-australia-optus-beyond-sydney-and-melbourne)

In Australia the plan uses Optus. WhistleOut puts Optus's population coverage at about 99.1% and its 5G population coverage at 94.5%, so in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and the coastal towns you will rarely notice the difference from Telstra. What differs is geographic reach: about 1.2 million square kilometres for Optus against about 2.1 million for Telstra, in a country of over 7.6 million.

That gap shows up on the long drives. Parts of the Great Ocean Road, the Nullarbor, the road to Uluru, and much of the Kimberley and Cape York are where you are likely to lose service. On the Great Barrier Reef, day boats from Cairns or the Whitsundays leave land coverage once they head to the outer reef.

Australia has switched off its 3G networks, and operators block handsets that cannot make 000 calls over 4G. Most modern phones are fine, but an older or imported model can be checked on the industry's isthisphoneblocked.net.au tool before you travel.

## Fourteen days round three continents: London, Edinburgh, New York, Los Angeles and Sydney

Multi-country route · 14 days · Source: https://viasimo.com/destinations/aukus-3-countries/#itinerary

A long-haul route for travellers heading west from the UK to Australia via the United States, with time in London and Edinburgh, New York, a two-day stopover in Los Angeles and the final days in Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

**When to go:** September to November works well on all three legs: mild autumn in London and New York, warm dry days in Los Angeles and spring in Sydney; avoid Edinburgh in August unless you want the festivals, and expect long security queues at all hubs in school holidays.

### Day 1 in AUKUS(3 countries): London: Westminster and the South Bank

- **Base:** London
- **Plan:** Start at Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament, cross Westminster Bridge and walk the South Bank past the London Eye to Tate Modern. Cross the Millennium Bridge to St Paul's Cathedral, then finish in Covent Garden. Contactless cards and phone wallets work on every bus and Tube line.
- **Mobile signal:** Strong 4G and 5G on O2, Vodafone or Three across central London; some deep Tube tunnels still drop between stations.

### Day 2 in AUKUS(3 countries): London: the British Museum and the Tower

- **Base:** London
- **Plan:** Spend the morning at the British Museum, then take the Tube to the Tower of London for the Crown Jewels and walk across Tower Bridge. In the late afternoon, explore Borough Market and walk back along the river, or visit the Natural History Museum and Hyde Park if it is raining.
- **Mobile signal:** Full coverage; thick-walled buildings like the Tower can drop to one bar indoors.

### Day 3 in AUKUS(3 countries): Train to Edinburgh: the Old Town

- **Base:** Edinburgh
- **Getting there:** LNER from London King's Cross to Edinburgh, about 4.5 hours.
- **Plan:** Take a morning train from King's Cross along the East Coast Main Line. In the afternoon, walk up the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle, then down Victoria Street to the Grassmarket. Climb Calton Hill in the evening for the view over the city and the Firth of Forth.
- **Mobile signal:** Good on the East Coast line with short gaps on the Northumberland coast; strong in Edinburgh.

### Day 4 in AUKUS(3 countries): Edinburgh: Arthur's Seat and Leith

- **Base:** Edinburgh
- **Plan:** Climb Arthur's Seat early from Holyrood, then visit the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Take the tram down to Leith for the Royal Yacht Britannia and the waterfront. In the afternoon, visit the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street before heading back towards London or flying out of Edinburgh.
- **Mobile signal:** Good on Arthur's Seat's open slopes and in Leith. The Scottish Highlands are a different story if you add a day trip: long gaps in Glencoe and beyond.

### Day 5 in AUKUS(3 countries): Fly to New York: Lower Manhattan

- **Base:** New York City
- **Getting there:** Flight London to New York, about 8 hours.
- **Plan:** Fly from London or Edinburgh to New York, having applied for an ESTA in advance. Time differences work in your favour heading west: arrive by mid-afternoon, then walk the Brooklyn Bridge from DUMBO towards Manhattan at sunset and see the 9/11 Memorial pools lit at night.
- **Mobile signal:** Your phone switches from a UK network to Verizon on landing. Strong 5G across Manhattan.

### Day 6 in AUKUS(3 countries): New York: the Statue of Liberty and Central Park

- **Base:** New York City
- **Plan:** Take an early ferry from Battery Park to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, booking timed tickets ahead. In the afternoon, take the subway to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and walk through Central Park past Bethesda Terrace to Columbus Circle. End at Times Square in the evening.
- **Mobile signal:** Full coverage on the harbour ferries and in Midtown; most subway stations have signal, some tunnels between them do not.

### Day 7 in AUKUS(3 countries): New York: the High Line and Greenwich Village

- **Base:** New York City
- **Plan:** Walk the High Line from Hudson Yards to the Whitney Museum, stopping at Chelsea Market. Continue through the West Village and Washington Square Park to SoHo and Chinatown. In the evening, go up an observation deck such as the Top of the Rock or the Empire State Building.
- **Mobile signal:** Excellent throughout Manhattan, including the High Line and the observation decks.

### Day 8 in AUKUS(3 countries): Fly to Los Angeles: Santa Monica

- **Base:** Los Angeles
- **Getting there:** Flight New York to Los Angeles, about 6 hours.
- **Plan:** Fly across the country to Los Angeles, watching for the Rockies and the desert south-west on a clear day. Collect a hire car or take a ride-hailing car to the coast, then in the late afternoon walk the Santa Monica Pier and the beach path south to Venice, with its canals and boardwalk. Stay for sunset over the Pacific.
- **Mobile signal:** Good 5G at LAX and along the coast; freeway traffic is the bigger problem than signal here.

### Day 9 in AUKUS(3 countries): Los Angeles: Griffith Observatory and Hollywood

- **Base:** Los Angeles
- **Plan:** Visit the Getty Center in the morning for its art and gardens above the city. In the afternoon, walk the Hollywood Walk of Fame, then drive or hike up to Griffith Observatory for the view of the Hollywood sign and the city at dusk. Catch your overnight flight to Sydney late in the evening.
- **Mobile signal:** Good across the city; the hiking trails in Griffith Park have a few weaker patches. Download everything you need for Sydney before boarding.

### Day 10 in AUKUS(3 countries): In the air across the Pacific

- **Base:** In flight
- **Getting there:** Flight Los Angeles to Sydney, about 14 to 15 hours.
- **Plan:** The overnight flight crosses the International Date Line, so you lose a calendar day and land in Sydney early on the morning of day eleven. Sleep as much as you can, keep hydrated and set your watch to Sydney time when you board. Fill in your Australian Incoming Passenger Card details on the plane.
- **Mobile signal:** No land signal over the Pacific. Switch roaming off for the flight and use the airline's wifi, if any, separately.

### Day 11 in AUKUS(3 countries): Sydney: the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge

- **Base:** Sydney
- **Plan:** Take the train from the airport to Circular Quay. Walk round to the Sydney Opera House and through the Royal Botanic Garden to Mrs Macquarie's Chair. After lunch, explore the Rocks and walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Keep the day gentle to recover from the flight.
- **Mobile signal:** Your phone switches to Optus on landing. Strong 4G and 5G around the harbour.

### Day 12 in AUKUS(3 countries): Sydney: Bondi to Coogee and Manly

- **Base:** Sydney
- **Plan:** Take the bus to Bondi and walk the coastal path to Coogee, about two hours with swim stops. In the afternoon, take the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly, walk the beachfront to Shelly Beach and return at dusk for the view of the city lights.
- **Mobile signal:** Good along the walk and on the Manly ferry, with a few weak spots below the cliffs.

### Day 13 in AUKUS(3 countries): The Blue Mountains

- **Base:** Sydney
- **Getting there:** Train from Sydney Central to Katoomba, about 2 hours.
- **Plan:** Take the train to Katoomba. Walk to Echo Point for the Three Sisters, then follow the Prince Henry Cliff Walk to Katoomba Falls or take the Scenic World railway down into the Jamison Valley. Return to Sydney for the evening.
- **Mobile signal:** Good in Katoomba and at the main lookouts; weak or none on the valley floor.

### Day 14 in AUKUS(3 countries): Sydney: Taronga Zoo and Darling Harbour

- **Base:** Sydney
- **Plan:** Take the ferry across the harbour to Taronga Zoo for Australian animals and a view of the city from the hillside. In the afternoon, visit Barangaroo Reserve and walk through Darling Harbour. Allow plenty of time for the train to Sydney Airport.
- **Mobile signal:** Excellent across the city and on the airport line.

### Staying connected on this AUKUS(3 countries) route

- Check whether your passport needs a UK ETA, a US ESTA and an Australian ETA or eVisitor, apply in advance, and keep the approvals saved offline.
- Ireland, Canada and New Zealand are not on this plan, so switch data off if a connection routes through Dublin, Vancouver or Auckland.
- Australia has switched off 3G; check your phone supports 4G calling (VoLTE) so emergency calls work.

## About this eSIM

### Why one plan for three far-apart countries

Unlike a European or South East Asian regional plan, nobody crosses between these countries by road. Every transfer is a long-haul flight, so the value here is not hopping across land borders but not having to buy, install and manage three separate eSIMs. You install once at home, and the line wakes up on a local partner network each time you land: O2, Vodafone or Three in the UK, Verizon in the USA, and Optus in Australia.

That also means there are long periods with no service at all. Nothing works in the air unless you pay for the airline's own wifi, and the plan does not cover the places you are likely to change planes on the way. Singapore, Dubai, Doha, Hong Kong, Auckland and Canadian hubs are all outside these three countries, so a long layover there will be offline unless you use airport wifi.

### Arriving at Heathrow, JFK and Sydney

When you land, turn off airplane mode and give the phone a minute or two to find the local partner. Coming off a 14-hour flight, it can help to restart the phone if the network name does not appear. Heathrow, New York JFK and Sydney Kingsford Smith all offer free wifi, which is a useful fallback while the eSIM registers, but your data line is what you want for booking a ride or messaging whoever is collecting you, because you will be walking to the taxi rank or train platform before most airport wifi sessions finish loading.

Remember that time zones differ by up to 11 hours between London and Sydney. Banks may send one-time codes to your home number at what feels like the middle of the night, so keep your home SIM switched on for texts.

### How the three networks compare

Opensignal's January 2026 reports give a useful picture of the partners. In the UK, O2 won Coverage Experience outright, narrowly ahead of EE, though it ranked last on average download speed. Vodafone and Three merged in mid-2025 and still run as separate brands; Three led on 5G download speed. In the USA, Verizon won Coverage Experience with 9.7 out of 10, ahead of AT&T and T-Mobile, but spent less time on 5G than its rivals. In Australia, Optus reports about 99.1% population coverage over roughly 1.2 million square kilometres, according to WhistleOut, compared with about 2.1 million square kilometres for Telstra, which matters if you are driving into remote areas.

In all three countries, the cities, suburbs and main motorways are very well covered. The differences appear once you head into empty country, which is covered in the sections below.

### Before you fly

Check that your phone supports the bands used in all three countries; most recent iPhones and Android flagships do. If you are travelling with an older or grey-import phone, run its IMEI through the Australian industry checker before you go, because Australian networks now block handsets that cannot make 000 emergency calls over 4G.

Download offline maps for any road trip in the Highlands, the American West or outback Australia, save airline boarding passes to your wallet app, and keep a note of each country's emergency number: 999 in the UK, 911 in the USA and 000 in Australia, with 112 also working from mobiles in the UK and Australia.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does an eSIM work in AUKUS(3 countries)?

Yes. Your AUKUS(3 countries) eSIM connects automatically the moment you arrive, with no roaming fees and nothing to set up at the airport. Coverage runs on 4G LTE and 5G where the network has rolled it out, and falls back to 4G elsewhere.

### Do I get 5G in AUKUS(3 countries)?

Yes, where it has been deployed. 5G runs on The local networks we use in AUKUS(3 countries), and your eSIM uses it automatically on a 5G-capable phone, dropping back to 4G LTE outside covered areas. No country is covered everywhere, so 5G availability varies by location.

### Does this plan work in Ireland, Canada or New Zealand?

No. It covers only the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia. Northern Ireland is part of the UK and is covered, but the Republic of Ireland is not. Canada and New Zealand, which often appear on the same itineraries, are also outside the plan. A connecting flight through Vancouver, Toronto or Auckland will be offline unless you use airport wifi.

### Will my phone be blocked in Australia after the 3G shutdown?

Most modern phones are fine. Australian networks closed 3G in 2024 and now block handsets that cannot make 000 emergency calls over 4G. Older models or phones bought for other markets are the ones at risk. Dial *#06# to find your IMEI and check it on the industry site isthisphoneblocked.net.au before you leave home.

### Is there mobile signal on the London Underground?

Increasingly. A shared 4G and 5G system run by Boldyn Networks carries all four UK networks, and ISPreview reported that more than 60% of the 121 underground stations were connected by August 2026, with the rest due around the end of the year. Some tunnel sections still drop out, so keep tickets and directions saved offline.

### Will I have signal in Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon?

Only around the developed areas. Visitor centres, lodges and village areas such as Old Faithful, Canyon Village or Grand Canyon Village usually have some signal, but most trails, backcountry roads and long stretches between them do not. Download offline maps, trail details and park entry reservations before you drive in.

### How much data do I need for 30 days in AUKUS(3 countries)?

For 30 days in AUKUS(3 countries), Viasimo sells 1 GB for $4.59 and 3 GB for $12.99. Our sizing recommendation, not a measurement: maps, messaging and the occasional lookup, about 1 GB a week; maps, social, photos and some browsing, about 3 to 7 GB a week. The data calculator on this site works it out from how you actually use your phone.
